Ascension St. John Encompass Rehabilitation Hospital of Owasso welcomes its youngest team member — Molly Bergman, a 2½-year-old certified therapy dog.

Molly, a golden retriever, and her handler, Courtney Bergman, who holds a master of science degree and is a certified speech-language pathologist and certified brain injury specialist, completed PetSmart’s obedience training, advancing through beginner, intermediate and advanced classes. After graduation, Molly passed the Canine Good Citizen test through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, officially becoming a certified therapy dog.

Now, Molly brings comfort and motivation to patients at Owasso on Mondays and Thursdays, greeting them with their schedules and encouraging outdoor therapy sessions in the courtyard when the weather is nice. Patients work on range of motion by tossing her favorite toy — a ball.

Molly’s presence lifts spirits across the hospital, and staff are even considering her for employee of the quarter. When she’s not at work, Molly enjoys French fries, dancing and watching Animal Planet at home.

We’re grateful to Courtney for her dedication and training that made Molly’s dream of working alongside her mom a reality.

Welcome to the team, Molly!

In recognition of World Stroke Day, we’re proud to spotlight two of our outstanding speech therapists: Katie Worsham and Courtney Bergman. Katie and Courtney have been leading an exciting advancement in patient care by training in the use of the Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) machine. This technology allows speech therapists to assess whether food or liquid is being swallowed safely. During the test, a small camera is inserted through the nose to view the throat from above.

Having the ability to perform swallow studies in-house means our patients can receive timely evaluations without exposure to radiation. This is a meaningful step forward in providing safer, more efficient care.

Thank you, Katie and Courtney, for your dedication!
