“I came into the ER in significant pain and spent many hours undergoing labs, a CT scan, an MRI and coordinating a transfer to Rochester for an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Throughout it all, Ian was exceptional, proactive, attentive and deeply committed to ensuring I was cared for. Each time my pain returned, Ian immediately consulted with the physician and returned promptly with medication.
Ian brought a calm, positive and supportive presence every time he entered the room. His sincerity and empathy were evident in every interaction. He was my strongest advocate, working seamlessly with the doctor, technicians and other staff on my behalf.

Mayo Clinic hospitals across the organization, including seven Mayo Clinic Health System hospitals, received star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which released the ratings earlier this month.

The ratings for overall hospital quality provide patients with information on several aspects of quality. The star ratings measure five broad categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care.

Backpacks are a school essential, but heavy or poorly worn packs can strain kids’ backs, shoulders and necks.

Tips to keep them safe:
• Keep backpack weight under 15% of your child’s body weight (for a 60-lb child, that’s less than 9 lbs).
• Always use both straps. Tighten so the pack sits high and snug—no swaying side to side.
• Choose wide, padded straps, multiple compartments for even weight, and lightweight materials.
• A waist belt and reflective strips can add extra support and safety.

Food poisoning, a type of foodborne illness, is a sickness people get from something they ate or drank. The causes are germs or other harmful things in the food or beverage.

Food poisoning symptoms usually start within hours or several days of eating the food. Most people have mild illness and get better without treatment. Sometimes food poisoning causes severe illness or complications. Connect with your healthcare provider if you think you have food poisoning and need care.

Symptoms include:
• Upset stomach.
• Vomiting.
• Diarrhea.
• Stomach pain and cramps.
• Fever.
• Headache.
• Blurred or double vision.
• Weakness.
• Problems with swallowing.
• Loss of movement in limbs.

Tips to minimize your risk:
• Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after using the toilet, before eating and before and after handling food.
• Wash kitchen utensils thoroughly.
• Don't eat raw or undercooked meat or fish. Use a meat thermometer to make sure the meat is cooked enough.
• Refrigerate or freeze leftovers.
• Throw out any food with mold.
• Throw out any food when in doubt.
• Clean the inside of your refrigerator every few months.

“My nurse made my birth and our hospital experience incredible. She came on shift at the same moment I decided to receive an epidural, after preparing my entire pregnancy for an unmedicated birth. Although it was a mentally difficult decision for me, she built trust and comforted me in the next steps of the process.

During the pushing stage, she was not only a cheerleader but a leader and voice of reason. I knew I could trust her. After our son arrived, the care she showed all three of us, two brand new parents and a brand new baby, was truly inspiring. Although my birth experience was completely different than I had prepared for, I would not have changed a thing thanks to her. During one of the most vulnerable times in your life, you need a strong and compassionate supporter, and she was all of that and more.”

It could be hand, foot and mouth disease a common viral infection that spreads easily in child care and schools. It shows up most often in summer and fall, but kids can catch it anytime. There’s no specific treatment, but you can take steps to help lower your child’s risk.

When packing a school lunch, aim for:
Whole grains – bread, wraps, crackers, brown rice, quinoa

Drinks – water or milk to hydrate and build strong bones

Limit foods high in added sugar, unhealthy fats, or caffeine, which can affect focus and energy.
