Based upon 2024 Steele County census data, population estimates 37,413 of which 18.4% of the residents of Steele County are 65 and older, approximately 6,889 residents.

The fastest growing segment of Minnesota’s aging population are those people over the age of 85, who are most likely to need the support of family, friends, and the community to remain living independently.

With help and support when they have a problem, knowing what resources are available, matching them up with a volunteer that enjoys doing things they do, the volunteer can be their "go to" person. They have someone to accompany and take them to the doctor, to get groceries, review paperwork, help with things as needed; relieving the burden of caregiving, and in many cases, as the friendships develops, expanding into the caregiver role.

🤸 Fall Prevention Program: Stepping Forward with Confidence

Falls are not an inevitable part of aging, but they are the leading cause of injury for seniors. At Healthy Seniors of Steele County, we've made it our mission to empower older adults to remain active, safe, and independent by tackling fall risk head-on. Our comprehensive Fall Prevention Program uses proven, evidence-based methods to strengthen the body and reduce the risk factors in the home.

In-Home Fall Safety Assessments
The majority of falls happen at home. Our trained staff can visit your home to conduct a thorough Home Safety Assessment. We will walk through your living space to identify potential hazards, such as:

Poor lighting or hard-to-reach switches.
Loose rugs, clutter, or uneven thresholds.
The need for grab bars in the bathroom or railings on stairs.

We then offer practical, personalized recommendations and can connect you with resources for making essential modifications, ensuring your home is a safe haven, not a tripping hazard.

📞 Call Healthy Seniors of Steele County at (507) 774-7648 to schedule a Home Safety Assessment or to find the next class session for A Matter of Balance or SAIL near you!

🤝 The Senior Companion Program: Connection, Support, and a Friendly Face

At Healthy Seniors of Steele County, we believe that staying connected is just as important as staying healthy. The struggle against loneliness and isolation is real for many seniors, and our Senior Companion Program is a heartwarming answer to that challenge.

This isn't just a service; it's a dedicated friendship that helps foster connection, well-being, and independence right where it matters most—in your loved one's home.

What Does a Senior Companion Do?
Our Senior Companion volunteers are kind, reliable individuals who provide invaluable social and non-medical support to seniors in Steele County.

Social Visits and Conversation: Companions provide regularly scheduled visits centered around friendly conversation, sharing interests, and meaningful interaction. A cup of coffee and a listening ear can make all the difference.

A "Good Neighbor" Hand: They offer assistance with light tasks and errands that help maintain independence, such as:

Reading mail or assisting with correspondence.

Playing games or sharing hobbies.

Providing assistance with errands or grocery shopping.

Accompanying your loved one on a walk or to a social event.

Fostering Well-being: By consistently offering a friendly face, companions help reduce the effects of social isolation, which has a direct and positive impact on a senior's mental and emotional health.

More Than Just a Visit: It's a Lifeline
The relationship between a senior and their companion often becomes a vital, life-enriching connection. It’s a way for your loved one to feel seen, heard, and valued within their community.

The benefits are profound:

Combats Isolation: Regular interaction with a trusted companion fills the social gaps that can lead to depression and decline.

Enhances Independence: The assistance with light tasks allows seniors to safely remain in their cherished homes for longer.

Peace of Mind for Families: Knowing your loved one has a dependable, caring person stopping by each week brings tremendous relief to family members, especially those who live out of town.

A Community-Focused, Accessible Service
The Senior Companion Program is part of the commitment of Healthy Seniors of Steele County to support all of our community members. Like many of our vital services, this program is donation/contribution-based, ensuring that financial concerns do not prevent a senior from receiving the support and friendship they need.
