👀 Because someone today needs to see this, before we start up another week! 👀
We all fall short in life....We aren't perfect and we shouldn't attempt to be...however, we should always be mindful and hold ourselves accountable for what we say and what we do, even when it's uncomfortable....especially when it's uncomfortable.
There's a significant difference in PROACTIVE accountability and REACTIVE accountability.
Reactive accountability focuses on addressing issues and problems AFTER they arise, often as a response to errors or failures. It involves taking action AFTER something has already happened, such as addressing mistakes, providing feedback on performance, or assigning blame...it is a response to the issue but it is NOT a solution to the root cause of the problem.
Proactive accountability focuses on PREVENTING problems from occurring in the first place. It involves setting clear expectations, providing support, and establishing processes to ensure that individuals and teams are equipped to succeed.
...Accountability is NOT about "beating yourself up or someone else" for a mistake. Rather, that mistake can be an opportunity to learn, grow and implement real change.
So if you find yourself in a situation where you are being held accountable... Acknowledge it, own it, reactively correct it AND implement a solution to be proactive moving forward! Don't waste time or emotion getting angry, arguing your defense, giving excuses or deflecting responsibility through emotional appeal, etc.
ACCEPT that accountability still involves AND includes necessary consequences regardless of the intention or the outcome. Even "mistakes" and "accidents" don't and should NOT preclude or exempt any of us from consequences...
Consequences can often motivate us to grow and make changes that lead to proactive accountability in the future....but that choice is up to you.
