Kinship care—when children are placed with relatives or close family friends instead of traditional foster homes—is increasingly recognized as beneficial for a child's well-being. However, many myths still surround it.

Myth: Kinship care is just like regular foster care.
Fact: Kinship care shares some legal similarities with foster care, but emotionally and culturally, it's different. Children often feel safer and more connected when they're with family, which can ease the trauma of being separated from their parents.

Myth: Kinship caregivers don’t need as much support because they’re family
Fact: Kinship caregivers often step in suddenly and may not be financially or emotionally prepared. They need just as much–sometimes more–support to provide a stable, loving environment for the child.

Myth: Biological parents won’t try as hard to reunify if their child is with family.
Fact: Kinship care can sometimes encourage reunification by creating a supportive circle. When children are with family, parents may feel more connected and less threatened, which can motivate positive change.
