Please be aware that we've had reports of patients being contacted by phone about genetic testing from a company purporting to be Bluegrass Internal Medicine, we are not making these calls. If you receive calls for services you didn't solicit, please be mindful that scammers will often spoof the Caller ID of a legitimate business.

Why where you get care matters.
Ever wondered why your medical bill sometimes looks more like a hotel invoice? This PBS video dives into how patients are often surprised with much higher charges when visiting physician offices owned by hospitals—even if the office isn’t on the hospital campus. It’s eye-opening and worth a watch.

At Bluegrass Internal Medicine, we’re proud to be a locally owned, independent practice. That means we can provide the same high-quality care at a fraction of the cost—typically one-half to one-third the price of hospital-owned offices for the same visit.

In the same building, our adjacent lab and diagnostics center, Professional Park Diagnostics, offers imaging and lab services at dramatically lower prices as well—often two to ten times less than the same tests at hospital-owned facilities.

We believe our community deserves excellent care without the sticker shock. Affordable, accessible, local—that’s our commitment.

Why patients are getting hit with surprise hospital fees for routine medical care

04/03/2025

Bluegrass Internal Medicine will be closed Friday, April 4th as our providers will be out of the office. Our staff will be available to take calls. Professional Park Diagnostics Lab will be open until noon as usual on Friday too.

Our internet and phone system are now back on line this morning, we appreciate your patience yesterday for those who attempted to contact the office.

Unfortunately our internet service is down this morning which also affects our phone system. We are working with our service provider to fix the issue as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience.

🟦 March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – Get Screened!

Did you know that colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.? It’s a serious disease, but it’s also one of the most preventable and treatable when caught early.

🔹 Who’s at risk?

While colorectal cancer is most common in people 50 and older, rates are rising in younger adults – which is why screening now starts at age 45 for most people.

If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or certain conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, you may need to start screening even earlier.

Screening saves lives – it detects cancer before symptoms start, leading to much higher survival rates.

Good news: Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover colorectal cancer screening! So there’s no reason to delay.

🔎 Screening Options:
✅ Colonoscopy – The gold standard. A doctor examines your colon with a camera, removing any precancerous polyps before they become cancerous. Done once every 10 years for most people (or more often if you're high-risk).

✅ Cologuard® (Stool DNA Test) – A non-invasive at-home test that looks for signs of cancer in your stool. Recommended every 3 years for those at average risk. (If abnormal, a colonoscopy is needed.)

📢 Bottom line: Colonoscopies prevent cancer. Cologuard helps detect it early. Talk to your provider at Bluegrass Internal Medicine to determine the best screening option for you.

💙 Don’t wait – schedule your screening today! Early detection saves lives.

❤️ February is Heart Health Month! ❤️

At Bluegrass Internal Medicine, we're dedicated to helping our patients lead heart-healthy lives. This February, let’s focus on simple, effective ways to improve your cardiac health.

🥗 Heart-Healthy Diet:
Your diet plays a crucial role in heart health, and there are several heart-healthy eating plans that patients can explore. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet focuses on reducing sodium while emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. The plant-based diet is rich in fiber and antioxidants, which help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. The low-carb diet (such as a balanced keto or modified Atkins approach) may benefit some individuals by reducing inflammation and improving metabolic health. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, and fish while incorporating plenty of fresh produce, whole grains, and lean proteins, making it one of the most well-researched diets for heart health. No matter which plan fits your lifestyle best, the key is to prioritize whole foods, healthy fats, and lean proteins while limiting processed foods, excessive sugar, and unhealthy fats.

🏃‍♂️ Heart-Healthy Exercise:
Regular physical activity strengthens your heart and lowers your risk of cardiovascular disease. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week—think brisk walking, cycling, or swimming. For those who prefer to exercise at home, simple activities like bodyweight exercises (squats, lunges, push-ups), yoga, jumping rope, or even marching in place can be excellent options. Many effective workouts require no equipment and can be done in a small space. There are also many low-impact exercise options available for those with joint or back pain, such as chair exercises, resistance band workouts, gentle yoga, or water aerobics. Patients can find great at-home workout ideas through online articles and guided workout videos on YouTube, which offer everything from beginner-friendly stretching to full-body cardio sessions. The key is to find something enjoyable and sustainable!

🚭 Heart-Healthy Lifestyle Choices:
Smoking is one of the leading causes of heart disease. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your heart, as it significantly reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease. Smokers are 2 to 4 times more likely to develop heart disease than non-smokers, and quitting can cut the risk of heart disease by 50% within just one year. Limit alcohol consumption, as excessive drinking can raise blood pressure. Be cautious with caffeine and energy drinks, which can cause palpitations and elevate blood pressure. Prioritizing good sleep, managing stress, and staying hydrated are also key factors in maintaining heart health. Small, mindful choices add up to big benefits for your heart.

Take care of your heart this February! For personalized guidance on heart health, schedule an appointment with us at Bluegrass Internal Medicine.
