Help us to preserve the Rudy Mine Trails and adjoining Jordan property as vital green space that provides a valuable economic, ecological, and recreational resource for the people of Daviess County and surrounding areas. Our goals include ensuring continuing access to local green space, maintaining walking, biking, and hiking trails, providing outdoor historical and ecological education programs for children and adults, protecting the natural habitat, and encouraging conservation, historic preservation, and ecotourism. Join us in our efforts to achieve our mission of preserving the 260-acre Rudy Mine Trails park, located west of Owensboro, Kentucky. Whether it's the excitement of rolling over and through the hills and valleys on a mountain bike, or marveling at the diversity of plants and animals while walking the same tails, or hearing the song of a rare bird drifting through the mottled green canopy, the value of experiencing the natural world found at Rudy Mine must be preserved for our children and grandchildren. Help us guide the sustainable development of the Rudy Mine Trails area by adding your name to our growing list of supporters who treasure this resource!

Steve Hahus invites you to walk with us for our annual wildflower walk, April 5, Saturday, at the trails.🌳🪻

We will meet at the parking lot at 9:30 AM. Since this walk is about wildflowers, we will be walking into the back area of the hills. Wear some sturdy walking shoes and bring a water. 😊👟

We're excited about warmer weather and the arrival of spring, and even have daffodils blooming already!🌷☀️We thought you might enjoy some inspirational pictures from the trails.

One of the best-known poems in the English language perfectly captures the joy that springs in the heart when we see spring flowers appear after a long and dreary winter. It's impossible to express it better than Wordsworth himself when he writes:

"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"
by William Wordsworth

'For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.'

(From "Breathe" magazine, issue #20)

As we celebrate Christmas this season may YOU be blessed with this message from the Friends of Rudy Mine Trails.🎄❤️ Christmas reminds us that the best gifts in life are Family, Friends, Laughter, and Love.

The trails invite you to relax in nature, stepping away from technology and frantic preparations for the holidays. It is enjoyable and we're so grateful when Obbie Dale Todd, Steve Hahus, and others lead our walks. However, simply walking around in nature relaxes us too.☺️

Enjoy the Holidays and Welcome 2025!

See you soon!

It's been a beautiful fall and we've enjoyed it at the Trails! Can't believe December is already here!❄️🎄🐦 Trails are still open and it's also time for Steve Hahus to present the Christmas bird count preparation at the Audubon meeting Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7 pm at the Owensboro Museum of Science and History.

The Bird Count is open to everyone, a great opportunity, and you don't have to be an experienced birder.

The actual West Daviess County Christmas Bird Count is Saturday, Dec. 21, at 7:30 A.M. Pick up your area map and record sheets at the meeting or at the Adams' that morning.

Contact Steve (270-903-1622) or
Judy Adams (270-313-4178) with questions.

Stay warm and see you at the Trails,

Happy Thanksgiving!🦃🍂 The weather was perfect for our fall walk with these local home schoolers and their families. Thankful for Julie Dunn, Classical Conversations Owensboro, and Obbie Todd for organizing it and these beautiful pictures.

It was as though Mother Nature extended a personal invitation for us to walk the hills. Obbie discussed plants, animals, and trees. We all loved when he unexpectedly let out a few bird calls to see if any birds would answer.🐦☀️

I provided a glimpse into how the coal mine/farming community functioned during this era, where the Carrico School teacher boarded, and how the students walked to her house and then onto the school.

It was obvious this group spends a great deal of time outdoors and enjoys nature! We are looking forward to another walk in the spring.

Keep in mind, if you eat too much for the holiday you can go for a walk at the trails.😀 See you there!

A few weeks ago, my cousin, Mary Anne Rudy Shoopman, was in town for a few days. We met at her brother's shop on Rudy Road. Mary Anne had a lot of old photos from her family and was wanting to see if anyone wanted some. Mary Anne let me copy this photo of her coloring on the stile block. She commented that as a child she often colored on the stile block. This photo is adorable.☺️🖍️

Stile blocks in this area were built years ago where livestock roamed. It allowed for people to access the animals and fields with ease. There was a huge stile block at the Rudy Mine Trails built for easy access to the pony-mule barn. Even after the mine closed, the stile block remained sturdy. We kept our riding horses in that area. To gain perspective on where it was, if you are at the magnolia tree in the yard and go north about 90 feet, that is about where the stile block was built.🌳🐴

I selected this other photo of her grandfather, Lee Rudy, to post here and file in the Rudy folders at the Kentucky Room at the Daviess County Public Library. He was a pleasant fellow and I visited with him ever so often. We lived in the same vicinity. On the back of his picture it says “Pap” on his 89th birthday, October 11, 1970.

Need a slower pace, to reset your nervous system? The Rudy Mine Trails is the perfect place to relax.🌳🍁

Enjoy and see you at the Trails,
Sara McNulty 🦋

Our walk with Steve Hahus was a lot of fun. We found several paw paw bushes with small fruit on them. Steve pointed out the passion flower fruit (apple) and I mentioned that portions of the plant are used in herbal remedies for anxiety. And, if you look up passion flower you will discover there is a legend about how parts of it represent various aspects in the life of Christ.

As many of you are aware Steve is a member of our local Audubon Society and is well informed about nature. He shared that 90 percent of the monarch butterfly population is extinct. We did see various butterflies and pollinators on flowers in the no mow zones.🐝🌾

The season in our area is a month ahead of our "normal season." At the end of the walk I had paw paws ready for walkers to sample and take home. Keep in mind paw paws are very nutritious.

Kentucky State University in Frankfort KY has extensively researched the nutritional aspects of the fruit and also growing the trees in orchards. Researchers from other parts of the world come to Frankfort to study paw paws.

I am planning for another walk or two in the weeks to come, looks like some great weather ahead!🚶🏼🍁

Until then see you at the trails,
Sara McNulty 🦋
