There are many people who donโt understand cancellation policies or why they are put in place, so Iโd like to take a moment to explain.
When a you schedule an appointment, we reserve that time for you and you alone. We make our weekly budgets based on those appointments and adjust accordingly. We may have to turn people down or rearrange our days to โmake them make senseโ. A lot goes on behind the scenes to make our days flow.
Our daily and weekly income keeps the business running. From big things like paying the rent, energy and phone bills, licensing fees, continuing education, liability insurance- to little things like toilet paper, pens/pencils, laundry detergent, cleaning products, hand sanitizer, mints, soap and batteriesโฆ. the list goes on and on (and on). Whatโs left after taxes and overhead, we take home to our families.
So, when you make an appointment and canโt come, letting us know early gives us an opportunity to fill that spot with someone else. Giving us a 24 hour notice allows us time to contact other clients and make arrangements in our schedules to accommodate. Giving us less than 24 hours notice puts us in a pinch. Sometimes we can fill it, sometimes we canโt. Thatโs why we ask for a small fee from you.
Same day cancellations and no shows really put us at a disadvantage. More often than not, we are left sitting there, twirling our thumbs. That income we budgeted is gone. That is why, in this situation, we ask for you to pay for the entire time you had reserved.
So whatโs the big deal? Itโs only $20, $50, $60, $70 dollars, right? Well, maybe not. If we have 4 people cancel last minute or not show, that $50 dollars turns into $200 very quickly.
We are not โmoney hungryโ. We are not โgreedyโ, we are not โselfishโ or any of the other things you might call us. We are simply running a business. This is not an uncommon practice in this industry and it is not unheard of. In fact- it is quite normal.
To summarize: being charged a late cancellation fee or a no show fee isnโt a punishment. Itโs not enforced to hurt anyoneโs feelings. It is not personal, itโs just a policy. So if you choose not pay the fee or decide not to come back, youโre the one doing the punishing.
