In February, our Community class focused on Art and Music Culture. Each week, clients explored different cultures from around the world — learning about traditions, artistic styles, and the powerful role music plays in bringing people together.

To wrap up the unit last week, each client chose a culture that inspired them, listened to music from that region, and created a painting influenced by what they learned.

Sam was especially proud of her piece — and she should be! Moments like this build creativity, cultural awareness, self-expression, and confidence all at once.

At Puzzle Pieces, learning goes beyond the classroom — it connects us to the world around us.

🏀 Calling All Local Special Olympics Athletes! 🏀

As we prepare for Ballin’ in the Boro 2026, we want to spotlight the incredible Special Olympics Kentucky athletes in our community.

This year, we are creating Special Olympics Trading Cards to hand out to our student athletes during the tournament. Our goal is to help young players learn about Special Olympics, celebrate competitive athletes with disabilities, and promote inclusion both on and off the court.

We are looking for local Special Olympics basketball players who would like to be featured on a custom trading card highlighting their accomplishments, position, fun facts, and love for the game.

This is about visibility.
This is about representation.
This is about showing our youth athletes what inclusion truly looks like.

This week, our behavior specialist Haley Logan created a video model to assist her client in learning to prepare one of their preferred meals. Video modeling is an evidence based practice for teaching specific behaviors or skills to individuals with disabilities. Video models are a great tool to reduce dependence on caregivers and staff because the individual can refer back to the video anytime they need a refresher!

Sometimes the most powerful lessons don’t come from a worksheet — they come from each other.

Last week, some of our friends in AVP decided to “fill each other’s cups” by intentionally sharing compliments and words of encouragement. One by one, they took time to recognize something positive about their peers — and in the process, brought so much light and positivity into the classroom.

Moments like this build more than confidence. They strengthen communication skills, empathy, and community. At Puzzle Pieces, we believe growth includes learning how to lift others up — and our friends showed us exactly how it’s done.

🎉 Care for the Caregiver 2026 — Tickets Are On Sale Now! 🎉

Puzzle Pieces is honored to help bring The More Than Project’s Care for the Caregiver Retreat to Owensboro, April 30–May 2, 2026 — and tickets are selling FAST.

The More Than Project, founded by Kate Swenson of Finding Cooper's Voice and Amanda DeLuca of Advocate.Out.Loud, have created a powerful community for caregivers across the country. We are proud to partner with their team to host this life-giving weekend right here in Owensboro.

This three-day retreat is intentionally designed to pour back into caregivers through encouragement, connection, and community. The weekend includes a Thursday Welcome Reception, a full day of inspiring keynotes and breakout sessions on Friday (plus the legendary dance party!) all at the Owensboro Convention Center and a beautiful closing brunch and keynote on Saturday at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.

✨ New this year: A dedicated Dad Experience, including a dad-focused breakout session and optional Dad’s Night Out — creating space for connection and practical encouragement.

We’re also excited to share that Thursday’s keynote will feature Tanner Smith and Nicci Smith from Love on the Spectrum. Tanner, a passionate advocate for inclusive employment, and Nicci, co-host of Talk to Me Sis podcast, will share a powerful message of perseverance, advocacy, and hope for families navigating the caregiving journey.

Caregivers give so much to others — this weekend is designed to give something back to you.

We can’t wait to welcome caregivers from across the country to our community for a weekend of rest, renewal, and meaningful connection.

🚨 Attention Local Business Owners & Managers 🚨

We’re looking to connect with businesses who are open to a conversation about supported employment partnerships.

Every organization has important tasks that often get pushed aside — the behind-the-scenes responsibilities that keep operations running but can stretch teams thin. Whether it’s small projects that never quite get finished or ongoing day-to-day needs, there may be an opportunity for collaboration.

Through Puzzle Pieces’ Employment Opportunities program, we partner with local businesses to help meet operational needs while creating meaningful, supported employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Common areas where businesses often benefit from support include:
• Cleaning and sanitizing
• Stocking and organizing inventory
• Filing and office organization
• Shredding, copying, assembling materials
• Restocking supplies
• Laundry or linen folding
• Dishwashing or prep support
• Labeling, tagging, and product assembly
• Mail sorting and data entry
• Packing orders or kit assembly
• Bussing tables or light facility upkeep

Sometimes the right person, matched to the right tasks with the right support, can make a measurable difference in workflow, morale, and productivity — while strengthening your company’s commitment to inclusion.

If you’re open to a brief, no-obligation conversation, we would love to connect.

Let’s build stronger businesses and a more inclusive workforce — together.

Independence is often built in small, everyday moments.

After a lesson, Karlie needed to put her gloves back on so she could independently propel her wheelchair safely and protect her hands. Before staff even stepped in, Chelsie noticed — and took the initiative to help.

That’s what growth looks like. Not just learning to care for yourself, but learning to care for others. We are so proud of both of these young women — one advocating for her independence, the other stepping up in kindness and awareness.

These are the moments that remind us inclusion is more than proximity. It’s community.
