Today is the day.

We are honored to welcome 200+ caregivers from 36 states to Owensboro for the Care for the Caregiver Retreat, hosted by The More Than Project & Finding Cooper's Voice. We are so happy they chose to have their annual retreat here, bringing individuals from across the country together in our community for a weekend of connection, encouragement, and support.

For Puzzle Pieces, this retreat is more than helping bring an event of this size to Owensboro. It reflects what we believe at our core — that caregivers deserve to be supported, seen, and poured into, just as much as those they care for.

We are proud of our community for showing up in such a meaningful way, and we are grateful to play a role in creating a space where caregivers can feel encouraged and connected.

Owensboro, let’s make this weekend one they never forget.

And a special shoutout to City of Owensboro and Visit Owensboro for helping us make this happen!

We are honored to welcome caregivers from across the country to Owensboro for the kickoff of the Care for the Caregiver Retreat, hosted by The More Than Project and Finding Cooper's Voice.

This weekend is dedicated to supporting and encouraging caregivers through meaningful connection and shared experiences. We are looking forward to hearing from keynote speakers Tanner Smith, featured on Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum, and his mother, Nicci Smith of the Talk to Me Sis podcast, as they share their family’s journey and perspective.

We are incredibly grateful to the City of Owensboro & Visit Owensboro for helping bring this national event to our community. We have no doubt that Owensboro will show up in a big way to welcome and support these caregivers.

Sometimes the most meaningful lessons aren’t taught — they’re modeled.

During a recent picnic, a funeral procession passed by, and Arvle quietly stopped, removed his hat, and paid his respects. In that moment, he demonstrated something powerful: awareness, empathy, and respect for others.

At Puzzle Pieces, we talk often about building life skills, but moments like this remind us that character, compassion, and social awareness are just as important. These are the skills that help individuals navigate the world with confidence and connection.

We’re proud of Arvle and the example he set — a simple act that spoke volumes.

Our Adult Day Training program recently enjoyed a lunch outing to Fazoli’s, providing an opportunity to connect, engage, and enjoy time together outside of the classroom.

Experiences like this are an important part of our programming. Community outings allow our clients to practice social skills, build confidence in public settings, and develop meaningful relationships beyond the walls of our campus.

At Puzzle Pieces, we believe that learning extends beyond structured environments. Creating opportunities for connection in the community is essential to fostering independence, inclusion, and a true sense of belonging.

Adults with disabilities face significantly higher rates of sedentary living, which directly contributes to poorer health outcomes. According to the CDC, nearly 50% of adults with disabilities engage in no aerobic physical activity, and they are almost twice as likely to be inactive compared to adults without disabilities. This lack of movement contributes to disproportionately high rates of obesity (over 40%), along with increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and mental health challenges. These disparities are often not due to choice, but to barriers such as limited access to inclusive programs, lack of structured opportunities for movement, and environments that do not support participation. As a result, many individuals fall into a cycle of inactivity that further impacts their independence, overall health, and quality of life.

At Puzzle Pieces, we recognize that addressing this issue requires intentional, consistent action. Health Matters is more than a recreational activity. It is a purposeful, daily intervention designed to increase movement, improve overall health, and establish meaningful routines. By embedding structured physical activity into each day, we are helping individuals build strength, reduce health risks, and experience a greater sense of purpose and engagement.

Still smiling thinking about our Spring Break day at TRUNNELL'S FARM MARKET.

After sharing some of our favorite photos, we had to share the videos too — such a fun day of exploring, laughing, and just enjoying the moment together.

Special shoutout to Carson Lanham for capturing it all on video!

Our youngest friends had a great day out at TRUNNELL'S FARM MARKET over Spring Break — enjoying the sunshine, exploring, and just being kids.

These are the kind of days we love. Getting out into the community, trying new things, and making memories together.

We’re continuing to share resources from the Autism Informed Employer video series through the Kentucky Employment First Council and ISAW.

This series is designed to help employers better understand how to create inclusive workplaces and support individuals on the autism spectrum in meaningful employment.

Small steps in understanding can lead to big opportunities for inclusion.
