Having should not prevent you from having close contact with your baby. 👶🏻👶🏼👶🏽👶🏾👶

Early and exclusive breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact is critical for the baby’s health, especially for babies born early or small.

This is too common in the birth space.

“They’re the experts, not me.” ... so you don’t listen to what your intuition is telling you.

“This must be my only option.” ... so you don’t ask if there’s an alternative.

“This is just routine procedure.” ... so you don’t ask questions or say no.

Guess what, Parents? Your birth is YOUR birth. Birth doesn’t happen to you- you are ACTIVELY birthing.

But sometimes it does feel like birth is happening to you. So how do you reclaim the authority of your birth?

SPEAK UP.
ASK QUESTIONS.
USE YOUR B.R.A.I.N.

To make decisions from a place of authority when confronted with an intervention, know the:

•BENEFITS. What are the long + short term benefits for both you and baby?
•RISKS. What are the long + short term risks for both you and baby?
•ALTERNATIVES. What are your other options?
•INTUITION. What are your instinctive feelings?
•NOTHING. What if you did nothing at all for now or indefinitley?

Don’t stay quiet so others stay comfortable. This is YOUR birth. Claim your authority.

How will you advocate for yourself in your birth space? 👇🏽👇🏽

Would you strap monitors on an elephant in labor and RESTRICT her movement? 🐘

Would you give ICE CHIPS to a laboring cat who is thirsty? 🧊

No, that’s ridiculous! Management of labor creates disregulation in the normal physiology of birth. And yet we do it to women in labor every day under the “illusion of safety.” 🤦‍♀️

So, why do intelligent, capable, low-risk women accept these restrictions?

We must first be convinced:
1️⃣That birth is inherently dangerous.
AND
2️⃣Technology and restrictions make it “safer”.
AND
3️⃣We have no power or authority to choose for ourselves.

✨“We are the only species of mammal that doubts it’s ability to birth. It is profitable to scare women about birth. But let’s stop it. I tell women, your body is not a lemon.”✨ -Ina May Gaskin

Yes, medical interventions are sometimes needed or wanted, but the risk of intervention must be weighed against the risk of disrupting normal physiological birth.

Here’s what the evidence based research shows:🔎

FACT: The uterus and body need fuel to function properly. If you are hungry in labor, eat. If you are thirsty, drink. 🍽

FACT: Even the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology changed their restrictions in 2007 on eating and drinking in labor after overwhelming evidence that it posed no significant risk of asphyxiation during cesarean. (In other words, “Oops, we were wrong!”)👨🏻‍⚕️

FACT: studies show continuous electronic fetal monitoring INCREASES your risk of c-section and medical interventions and does NOT improve outcomes for mom or baby… And yet it continues to be the standard care in hospitals. 🏥

“Creepy dudes from the 1600's are why you gave birth on your back.
Lying on your back to give birth closes down your pelvis and almost always increases pain. So why is this the most commonly used position for birth in the Western world today?
Because of King Louis XIV & Dr. Françios Marcineau.
At a time when only women attended births, it's reported that King Louis XIV insisted on watching his offspring be born. He didn't like the obstructed view caused by a birthing stool (most common position at the time), so he insisted his wife or mistress give birth on her back with her legs in stirrups.
Once word got out that this is how royalty gave birth, the new position began to gain popularity.
At the same time, French doctor Marcineau, who believed pregnancy to be pathological, thought women would breathe more easily and have reduced pain when lying in bed for birth. His view of pregnancy as a disease had a hand in the change from midwife-attended birth to the primarily surgeon-attended birth that we see today.
Though this position is usually the worst option for the woman giving birth, it is still the easiest & most comfortable for those attending the birth. The doctor/midwife/nurse can simply sit on a stool and have a perfect visual, which is a good part of why it is still used today.”

I was definitely a toilet station mama!

💫The toilet is dilation station💫
🌟 You naturally relax your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on a toilet
🌟 You are more used to being relaxed in the bathroom
🌟 You can turn the lights down and even straddle the toilet backwards to help make you more comfortable and relaxed (use pillows)
🌟 You are working with gravity
🌟 You are opening your pelvis, which gives baby lots of room to navigate through the birth canal
