Hydration is the #1 key to bladder health. Drinking enough water daily helps flush out waste, reduce irritation, and lower your risk of infection. Sip frequently throughout the day, and monitor your urine color. If it's not pale yellow or clear, drink more.

Smoking is the single greatest threat to bladder health. Aside from causing cancer, smoking can also worsen symptoms of overactive bladder and interstitial cystitis, such as urgent and frequent need to urinate. Coughing spasms can also provoke urine leakage in smokers.

For good bladder health, it's helpful to maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight places significant pressure on the bladder and pelvic floor muscles, and the constant strain can lead to bladder control issues.

Some food and drink can irritate the bladder, worsening urgency or frequency. Common irritants include caffeine, alcohol, citrus, spicy foods, and artificial sweeteners. If you feel discomfort, try keeping a food diary to identify foods you may wish to limit or avoid.
