The AAP is a member organization of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The objectives of the Association are to promote the advancement of teaching and research in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation within an academic environment. The organization acts as a sounding board and forum for the exchange of ideas and information relative to all phases of the art and science of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. It promotes the distribution of information to future young physicians who will be practicing this art and science for the benefit of the public health and welfare. The organization also becomes involved in the exchange of information from other areas of medicine, both in basic science and in clinical areas of teaching and research. The AAP holds an annual meeting, with in-depth courses focusing on issues pertinent to academic physiatry in research, education and administration. This several day conference also features scientific poster presentations as well as committee and council meetings. The mission of the AAP is carried out between meetings by working committees. The most active committees focus on academic affairs, education and research. Other committees address bylaws, membership, programs, nominations and financial matters. The members of the Association shape its policies and programs through a Board of Trustees. The AAP officers maintain liaisons with a number of related scientific societies, government agencies and academic institutions. The AAP also sponsors several councils to stimulate, promote and coordinate the unique concerns of special interest groups within the organization. Current councils include PM&R chairs, residency program and fellowship directors, researchers, residency coordinators, residents and fellows, and residency program coordinators. This is an informal group of AAP members and others who are interested in physiatry. It is not officially associated with the AAP. 🔔 Program Update for !

We’ve got an unexpected and exciting change to Thursday’s plenary:

Pablo Celnik, MD will now be presenting our DeLisa lecture and first plenary session of the week! A physiatrist, physician-scientist, and internationally recognized leader in rehabilitation and academic medicine, Dr. Celnik currently serves as CEO of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, guiding its expansive clinical, research, and education enterprise.

This session will explore precision rehabilitation—delivering the right intervention to the right person at the right time—using data and innovation to elevate outcomes and value. Our Story

The Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) was founded in 1967 to serve as the national organization of physiatrists who are affiliated with medical schools. The AAP is a member organization of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The mission of the AAP is to promote the advancement of education and research in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (also known as physiatry) within an academic environment. We act as a conduit for the exchange and conception of cutting-edge practices relative to all phases of physiatry. We promote the distribution of information to future young physicians who will be practicing this art and science for the benefit of public health and welfare. The AAP also becomes involved in the exchange of information from other areas of medicine, both in basic science and in clinical areas of teaching and research. We foster all of this through a leading journal in physiatry (the Academic Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), Virtual Campus, committees and collaborations among members, mentorship opportunities and our Annual Members. The AAP’s Annual Meeting brings together over 1,100 physiatry professionals - from physicians to residents/ fellows to medical students to administrative directors. It features 70+ in-depth sessions focused on issues pertinent to academic physiatry in research, education and administration. This 5-day conference also features scientific poster presentations as well as committee and council meetings. The mission of the AAP is carried out by working committees. The most active committees focus on academic affairs, education and research. Other committees address bylaws, membership, programs, nominations and financial matters. The members of the Association shape its policies and programs through a Board of Trustees. The AAP’s officers maintain liaisons with a number of related scientific societies, government agencies and academic institutions. The AAP also sponsors several councils to stimulate, promote and coordinate the unique concerns of special interest groups within the organization. Current councils include PM&R chairs, residency program and fellowship directors, researchers, residency coordinators, residents and fellows, and residency program coordinators. The Association of Academic Physiatrists’ page is provided for general information purposes only. The AAP does not recommend particular treatment for specific individuals.
