“For as long as I can remember, weight has been a struggle for me. My battle with it began around the age of 12. Over the years, I tried everything—Weight Watchers, every diet plan imaginable, gym memberships, strict exercise routines—you name it, I’ve probably done it. Many times I would have success for a while, but eventually the weight would return.
Before surgery, I reached the highest weight I had ever been. I felt like I had hit my breaking point. I was exercising, dieting, and doing everything I had always done in the past, but once I entered my 40s, my body just wasn’t responding the same way. Hormonal changes and a stagnant metabolism made it feel like nothing was working anymore. I realized that I needed an additional tool to truly change my health.
More than anything, I was unhappy with myself. I began withdrawing from people and social situations. As a social worker for over 20 years, connecting with people is literally my profession, yet I found myself not wanting to be around others because of how I felt about my weight.
Deciding to pursue bariatric surgery was not easy, but it was one of the most important decisions I’ve made for my health and my life. When I reached out to the surgery clinic, the support I received made all the difference. Carah Walker, FN, was such an encouragement throughout the process. Her guidance and belief in me helped me stay focused and committed.
I also would not be where I am today without the incredible support of my spouse and friends. This journey has reminded me that sometimes strength comes from allowing others to walk beside you.”
