Does your body know the warning signs? Mississippi heat doesn't ease in slowly; it arrives fast. We want to make sure our community knows how to spot heat-related illness before it gets serious.

Here's a quick breakdown:

😓 Heat exhaustion — warning signs to watch for:
- Heavy sweating
- Cool, pale, or clammy skin
- Nausea or dizziness
- Muscle cramps
- Fatigue or weakness

What to do: Get to a cool place, drink water, rest. If symptoms don't improve, seek medical treatment.

🚨 Heat stroke — this is a medical emergency:
- Hot, red, dry skin
- Rapid pulse
- Confusion or loss of consciousness
- Body temperature above 103°F

What to do: Call 911 immediately.

The people most at risk? Kids, older adults, and anyone spending extended time outdoors.

If you're not sure how serious something is (and it’s not an emergency), call us. We'd rather you check in than wait too long. Call 911 for severe heat stroke symptoms.

💾 Save this post and share it with someone who plans to be outside all day!

Double Decker is THIS weekend, Oxford. 🎶 Here's how to enjoy every minute of it safely.

The 29th annual Double Decker Arts Festival hits the Square this Friday and Saturday, April 24–25 and we are SO here for it!

With over 150 art vendors, 20+ food vendors, and live music all weekend, it's going to be an incredible two days. But spending hours on concrete in the Mississippi heat and humidity takes a toll on your body.

Here's how to feel great all weekend long:

☀️ Wear sunscreen — and reapply every 2 hours
💧 Drink water constantly — don't wait until you're thirsty
👟 Wear comfortable shoes — you'll be on your feet all day
🎒 Bring a small first aid kit — blister pads, pain reliever, allergy meds
🍉 Snack smart — fuel up between food vendor visits
🧢 Wear a hat — shade goes a long way in the Oxford sun

If something comes up this weekend (a bad blister, a sudden fever, a sprain) Ole Town Med's urgent care is here for you. No appointment needed.

Enjoy every minute, Oxford. This is YOUR weekend. 💙

🔁 Share this with your Double Decker crew so everyone has the best weekend possible! Tag who you're going with 👇

If you’re tired all the time, it might not just be your schedule.

We live in a culture that treats exhaustion like a badge of honor. But if you're getting enough hours of sleep and still waking up drained your body might be trying to tell you something.

Chronic fatigue can be linked to a number of treatable conditions, including:

🔴 Thyroid issues — an underactive thyroid can leave you exhausted no matter how much you sleep
🔴 Anemia — low iron means your blood isn't carrying enough oxygen
🔴 Diabetes — blood sugar imbalances zap your energy levels
🔴 Sleep apnea — you may be waking up dozens of times a night without knowing it
🔴 Depression or anxiety — mental health and energy levels are very connected
🔴 Vitamin deficiencies — low B12 or vitamin D are more common than you'd think

Most of these are very treatable once you know what you're dealing with. A simple visit and some basic bloodwork can give you and your doctor a clear picture of what's going on. You deserve to feel energized. Don't just push through it. 💙

Most people only call the doctor when something is wrong. Some of our most important appointments aren't for sick visits at all. They're for people who feel perfectly fine and want to keep it that way.

Here are a few reasons to come see us even when you're feeling great:

🩺 Wellness visits — a full check-in on how your body is doing
🧪 Routine bloodwork — catches issues before symptoms ever show up
💊 Medication reviews — make sure everything you're taking is still working for you
📋 Chronic condition check-ins — staying ahead of diabetes, blood pressure & more
🗣️ Just to talk — questions about your health, lifestyle, diet, or anything on your mind

There's no such thing as a "too small" reason to come in. If it's on your mind, it's worth a conversation.

Building a relationship with your primary care provider at Ole Town Med means you'll always have someone in your corner who knows YOUR health, not just your symptoms.

That's the kind of care we're proud to provide. 💙

📲 New patients are welcome! DM us or call to schedule your first visit with Ole Town Med.

FAQ: Do I really need sunscreen on cloudy days?

You can still get sunburned even on cloudy days here in Mississippi. This is one of the most common questions we hear as the warmer months roll in and the answer might surprise you.

✅ YES

Up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can pass right through clouds. That means even on an overcast day, your skin is being exposed to the rays that cause sunburn, premature aging, and increased skin cancer risk.

A few sun safety basics worth knowing:

☀️ Use SPF 30 or higher — every single day
☀️ Reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors
☀️ Don't forget your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet
☀️ UV rays reflect off water, sand, and even concrete
☀️ Kids need sunscreen too — start the habit early

Skin cancer is one of the most common and most preventable cancers out there. A little SPF goes a long way. If you've noticed any new or changing spots on your skin, don't wait. Consult with your medical provider.

Some symptoms are easy to ignore. We're not here to scare you, but we do want to empower you to listen to your body.

Here are 5 signs it's time to come see us:

1️⃣ Fatigue that won't go away — Feeling tired all the time. It can signal thyroid issues, anemia, sleep disorders, and more.

2️⃣ Unexplained weight changes — Gaining or losing weight without trying is worth a conversation with your doctor.

3️⃣ Frequent headaches — Occasional headaches are common. Frequent or severe ones need a closer look.

4️⃣ Shortness of breath — Especially with normal activities. Your heart and lungs may be trying to tell you something.

5️⃣ Anxiety or mood changes that feel new — Mental and physical health are deeply connected.

None of these mean something is definitely wrong. But they DO mean it's worth checking in. You know your body better than anyone. Trust that. 💙

Men are 33% less likely than women to see a doctor regularly. We get it. Life is busy, you feel fine, and going to the doctor keeps getting pushed to the back burner.

But the health issues that affect men most like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers often show zero symptoms until they're serious.

Here's what men should be checking regularly:

❤️ Blood pressure — gets bad quick if left unchecked
🩸 Cholesterol & blood sugar — key markers for heart disease & diabetes
⚖️ Weight & BMI — linked to dozens of preventable conditions
🔬 Prostate & colon cancer screenings — based on age & family history
😴 Sleep quality — more connected to your health than most people realize

You take care of everyone else. It's time to take care of yourself too.

At Ole Town Med, we make it simple, straightforward, and judgment-free. 💙

📲 Tag a man in your life who needs to hear this. Then help him book that appointment!

Urgent care and the ER are NOT the same thing. This myth is worth clearing up, because knowing the difference can save you hours of waiting and hundreds of dollars.

❌ MYTH: Urgent care is just a walk-in emergency room.
✅ FACT: Urgent care and the ER serve very different purposes.

🏥 Go to the ER for:
- Chest pain or trouble breathing
- Severe allergic reactions
- Head injuries or loss of consciousness
- Stroke symptoms
- Uncontrolled bleeding

🚶 Come to Ole Town Med Urgent Care for:
- Fevers, flu & colds
- Minor cuts, burns & sprains
- Ear infections & sore throats
- UTIs & minor infections
- Mild allergic reactions

Using urgent care for the right situations means faster treatment for you AND shorter ER wait times for people with true emergencies.

[This post is for educational purposes only. When in doubt about a serious symptom, call 911 or go to your nearest ER.]
