In honor of the World Immunization Week, we would like to share a vaccine testimonial from one of our clinic’s families. Duncan suffered scary complications from the RSV virus before a vaccine became available. Thankfully, his younger sibling was protected from a similar outcome by a vaccine.
“I am a mom of three young kids and a strong advocate for childhood vaccinations and preventative medicine in general. I’m also the daughter of a retired Pediatrician, so I grew up understanding how important prevention is when protecting children’s health.
When my middle child, Duncan, was born in 2022, there was no preventative protection available for RSV. At just two months old, Duncan was diagnosed with RSV and ultimately hospitalized for several days receiving oxygen. I don’t know if you’ve ever watched your baby struggle to breathe, but I have, and it will go down as one of my top five scariest moments. I felt so scared and completely helpless.
Unfortunately, the story didn’t end when we left the hospital. For the last three years, Duncan has had significant asthma (or reactive airways, as Dr. Phillips called it until Duncan turned two). Even something
as basic as a common cold can trigger wheezing and we still have to give him breathing treatments.
When my youngest child, George, was born a year and a half later, Beyfortus had become available to help protect babies from RSV. Dr. Phillips discussed it with me and I had absolutely no hesitation in deciding to vaccinate George based on what I have been through with Duncan.
George has been in daycare since he was four months old, and there have been confirmed cases of RSV in his class on multiple occasions. George has never gotten it, and I don’t believe that is just luck.
As a Mom who has experienced both a baby hospitalized with RSV and a baby protected from it, I can’t tell you how happy I am that Beyfortus is now an option parents can choose to help protect their babies from RSV and the potential long term complications that can come with it.
If you have a baby or are expecting one soon, I strongly encourage you to talk to your Pediatrician about RSV protection for your child. Because medical progress matters, and sometimes it can change a child’s entire story. And if sharing our experience helps even one baby avoid a hospital stay like Duncan’s, it’s worth telling.”
