Sol Yamel Porras - A celebration of life.

Sol Yamel Porras (May 18, 1980- November 13, 2018) - Political Science and Minor in Chicana/o Studies, 2004 California State Northridge : This altar is dedicated to the life and memory of a daughter, sister, tia, amiga, compañera, activista, defendora of social justice and immigrant rights. Sol was a Chingona Chicana and a mujer who embodied passion and purpose in all that she touched. From representing her Oxnard familia, leading CSUN M.E.Ch.A. meetings and protests, defending gente from ICE raids, working at an immigration law clinic in Nebraska, or simply sharing precious moments with her mami y papi, sisters, nieces and nephews- Sol was present with her full corazón. Sol, AKA “Ranchita” “Solazo” “Solita” our “Sunshine” was the one who brought friends from all different circles together, siempre lista para la banda, our dancing queen, always had the best quebradita, cumbia, banda and funk movidas!

Sol, your friendship and sisterhood is forever in our hearts. You lived and loved more in your 38 circles around the sun than many of us ever even dream of. The rise of the sun reminds us of the sweet sounds of your laughter and vocal lyrics of Billie Holiday. We thank you for your contributions and life lessons of living it up, speaking truth to injustice, and never forgetting to have a good time in the process. We watched you travel around the globe from Mexico to Cuba, from Brazil to Venezuela and then to Costa Rica (with your beloved mama on her birthday last year). We cherish and honor the short time we had you in our lives, nuestro Sol- like a bird soaring, leaving a trail of memories and love ... siempre viva en nuestros corazones.
