Say hello to our August Hero Highlight, Dr. Rosa Pascual. For 23 incredible years, Dr. Pascual has been a driving force behind the growth of Vision Care at Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc. She began her journey as our very first full-time Optometrist and now leads the department as Optometry Director. Through her leadership, compassion, and dedication, Vision Care has grown from just two locations to 12 Health Centers across our Ventura County. Dr. Pascual continues to inspire those around her by mentoring the next generation of Optometrists and ensuring every patient receives the care they deserve. We are proud to celebrate her this month.

Last week was full of great moments for National Health Center Week, and one of the highlights was welcoming the California Primary Care Association to our Ventura Health Center. Some of our leadership team including CEO Gagan Pawar, MD MBA, Interim CMO Todd Monroe MD, and COO Anna Monroy, MS had the opportunity to share more about what makes Federally Qualified Health Centers so special. From the care we provide to the communities we serve to some of our best practices in action, it was a meaningful visit and a great way to celebrate the work we do every day.

To showcase the beauty of Ventura County and the communities we serve, we selected three iconic locations: the scenic Ojai Meadow Preserve, the historic Camarillo Ranch House, and the vibrant Heritage Square in Oxnard.Each backdrop reflects the unique spirit of our region. A heartfelt thank you to local photographer Amy Madson, whose talent and care helped bring these images to life. As we wrap up National Health Center Week, we’re celebrating the heart of our mission: community care. Our incredible Health Outreach Team, including Health Educators and Community Health Workers, spent the week visiting youth and adult shelters, delivering dental kits, tote bags, and information on Dental and Mental health services. They also reached local farm sites to share resources with agricultural workers and their families, and provided screenings for blood pressure, glucose, BMI, and vision, along with education on chronic conditions, prevention, and early detection.
At Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc., we’re proud to serve our communities and grateful for the dedicated team members who bring care, resources, and education directly to the people we serve. Thank you to everyone who helped make this week so impactful.

Our Story

In 1971, social activists Mary Hummel, Mamie Barger, and Reverend Eleazar H. Echeverria opened the Santa Paula Free Clinic in a shared karate studio in the city of Santa Paula. Dedicated to serving the medical needs of Ventura County’s medically underserved population, this tiny clinic was staffed by a team of volunteers and nurses. As the need for quality, affordable health care grew, the clinic expanded to better serve its patients. In 1975, through a rural health grant funded by the State of California, the Santa Paula Free Clinic became the Community Clinic of The Santa Clara River Valley. The clinic moved to a larger location in Santa Paula, and hired its first full time staff, including a physician, a nurse, and a community health worker. In March of 1979, the clinic moved to Saticoy, CA. The Oxnard health center came next in 1980, The scope of services had grown beyond the Santa Clara River Valley, hence the name Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc. to cover the entire Ventura County. Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc.., served more than 3,000 patients during the first year of operation, marking a new era in healthcare for Ventura County. Today, Clinicas, as we are commonly known, continues to grow and expand. Now we have thirteen full-service health centers throughout Ventura County. For patients who are unable to come to us, we go to them, with fully equipped, mobile medical and dental units. Clinicas now serves over 100,000 patients seeking medical, dental, optical, preventive, prenatal, and mental health care. Our work doesn’t stop here. Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc. looks forward to adding more health centers, more outreach and education programs, and more comprehensive services in the years to come. Whatever the medical needs, Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc. is here for the patients and their families of today and tomorrow.
