A Friend for the Journey

Anam Cara End-of-Life Services was born of death. A few years ago, my father and I admitted my terminally ill mother to a local hospice. There, her last days were filled with kindness and attention. She was allowed the dignity of dying her own way and was supported by hospice staff and volunteers who understood the beauty and power of holding space for her. After she died, the staff continued to hold my father and me as we grieved.

This compassion resonated with me deeply, and my gratitude led me to become a hospice volunteer with Silverado Los Angeles Hospice and VITAS Healthcare. I’ve sat with many patients, at their homes or in facilities, holding their hands, listening to their stories, being a calm and loving presence. Often friends remark, “I wish you were doing this when my mom/dad was in hospice.” And, I wish I had been too.

And so, I deepened my practice so that I could more fully serve both the dying and their loved ones. I studied at Sacred Crossings in Los Angeles, and through this organization, I earned certification as a professional death midwife, home funeral guide, and funeral celebrant. I am also a non-denominational ordained minister.

End-of-life care is an age-old tradition, a sacred calling. I am humbled by the power it holds to connect us and to heal us. It is an honor for me to serve as a soul friend, an anam cara, to those embarking on life’s greatest journey.
