Herbal spotlight: hydrangeas 🩷💜💙

Hydrangeas are so beautiful, but did you know that they have been used for centuries to cure ailments in the body? The part of the plant that is used medicinally is the root, and it usually is taken in a tincture, tea, capsule, powder, or syrup.

Hydrangea is commonly used as an antilithic, meaning it prevents kidney stones. It does this by acting as a diuretic and flushing the kidneys, while decreasing other factors that lead to stone buildup; it reduces the acidity of urine, and reduces blood urea nitrogen (BUN).

Hydrangea is also used medicinally to reduce inflammation, treat urinary tract infections, reduce prostate size, fight autoimmune disease, and lower blood sugar. There are antioxidant constituents in hydrangea root, as well as constituents that benefit the liver. ☺️

Herbal spotlight: rosemary 🌱

Rosemary, Rosmarinus officanalis, is a plant in the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It is considered aromatic, spicy, warming, and drying. One of its main constituents is rosmarinic acid. It also contains iron, calcium, and vitamin B6.

Rosemary is used medicinally as a nervine, astringent, diuretic, anti-spasmodic, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antibacterial, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antidiabetic, and cognitive enhancer. Rosemary helps soothe the nervous system, and can be useful for stomach aches, headaches, circulatory, weakness, and low blood pressure. The essential oil can be used as a circulatory stimulant.

Rosemary is said to “gladden the heart” and it helps people think more clearly. (It’s ability to decrease inflammation helps the brain.) A research study with mice using rosemary tincture showed an antidepressant effect that appeared to be mediated by the monoaminergic system. A separate study with mice showed that drinking rosemary tea for four weeks also showed antidepressant effects. Rosemary has also been shown to interact with dopamine receptors and it elevates the brain’s dopamine level.

Using rosemary medicinally is contraindicated during pregnancy, due to a potential emmenagogue effect. (It can stimulate blood flow to the uterus, encouraging menstruation.)

This rosemary plant is in my lil herb collection on my front porch because I love rosemary and use it often. 😊

Are you familiar with colloidal silver? Have you ever used it before?

Colloidal silver is an all natural antibacterial. To be more specific, it is distilled water with microscopic silver particles suspended in it. Silver is a well-documented antimicrobial, and is highly effective at killing bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses. It is perfectly safe for use around pets and young children. 🐶🐱👶🏼

Colloidal silver can be used to clean up germs in the kitchen, the bathroom, on booboos - literally wherever you need to kill germs! I was super impressed by how quickly it cleared up my son’s pink eye a while back.

At Santa Rosa Holistic Health, we proudly make our own colloidal silver, and you can buy it at our office here in Pace; or, if you aren’t local, you can buy some on LearnHowNatureHeals.com. 😊

I think it’s so fun to get my ears candled that I decided to get certified to candle other peoples ears too! My 6 year old son, Henry, is now obsessed with having his ears candled. Have you ever tried it? What did you think??

Some people think that the point of ear candling is to remove ear wax. And while it can - due to the vortex action of the smoke - the real reason ear candling has been used for centuries is because of its relaxing ability. It can shift your brain into a relaxed and calm state, activating your parasympathetic nervous system, commonly known as the “rest and digest” system.

At , we only buy the best ear candles made from double wrapped organic cotton, food grade wax, and a patented safety tip. 🩷

*Do not have your ears candled if you have a ruptured or perforated eardrum or if you have an acute ear infection.

Herbal spotlight: mint 💚

There are many varieties of mint, with the 2 most popular being peppermint (Mentha piperita) and spearmint (Mentha apicata). Mint belongs to the Lamiaceae family, and most of the plants in this family can be easily identified by their square stems and leaves that are directly opposite each other.

Mint is a cooling herb, and it can help with digestion issues like colic, nausea, abdominal pain, and heartburn. Mint tea can help with a sore throat and reducing cold symptoms. The smell of mint can make a headache subside. Mint is also very nutritive and contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. ☺️

Some well-known plants that you might not know are in the mint family are lavender, catnip, lemon balm, basil, oregano, and thyme. 🌿

The plant in the picture is sweet mint, Mentha suavis. It is part of my personal collection of herbs. 🥰

Herbal spotlight: Stinging Nettle 💚

Stinging Nettle, or Urtica dioca, is one of my most commonly used herbs. I drink it in a tea almost every day, and I recently took several gallons of it to an event, where it was a huge hit.

Why stinging nettle, you ask?

Stinging nettle is an incredibly nutritive herb. It is high in many minerals, like calcium and magnesium, and vitamins, like C and K. It can help reduce inflammation, blood sugar levels, allergy symptoms, and blood pressure.

Stinging nettles are not contraindicated for too many people, that’s why it’s a great choice to take to an event. However, nettles may not be right for you if you have low blood pressure or diabetes currently being managed by medication, or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, due to lack of research.

Herbal spotlight: American beautyberry 💟

There are tons of beautyberry bushes in my backyard. I think the berries are so gorgeous so I always love seeing them pop up, but did you know that these are also super useful plants?

American beautyberry, or Callicarpa americana, is an old-time mosquito repellant! It has been used for decades, and in 2006, a chemist identified 2 compounds in the beautyberry plant - callicarpenal and intermedeol - that repel both mosquitos and blacklegged ticks, which are carriers for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. The beautyberry constituents were shown to be as effective as DEET!

It is very easy to make beautyberry mosquito repellant. Put 1 cup of crushed beautyberry leaves into a jar. Cover the leaves with 4 ounces of alcohol and let stand for 2 days. Strain the leaves from the mixture. Pour into empty spray bottle.

*You can use rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, vodka, or everclear.

Beautyberries are also edible, although they dont taste that great. They can be made into jelly, and the addition of sugar makes them taste much better. 😋

Do you have beautyberries growing near you? Have you ever used beautyberry mosquito repellant?

Herbal spotlight: milk thistle

Milk thistle, Silybum marianum, is a member of the Asteraceae or Aster family. The part that is used medicinally is the seed. Milk thistle is bitter, oily, and nutty tasting.

Milk thistle is a useful antioxidant, hepatoprotective (protects the liver), hepatorestorative (restores the liver), neuroprotective, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and choleretic (increases bile).

Silymarin, the main active constituent in milk thistle, supports liver biotransformational capacity and prevents the depletion of glutathione induced by alcohol and other toxic chemicals. Silymarin has been shown to increase the level of glutathione in the liver by up to 35%. (Glutathione is necessary in both phases 1 and 2 of of liver conjugation.)

Milk thistle is helpful for liver diseases, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver.

Research on silymarin shows it is a direct free radical scavenger and is many times more potent in activity than vitamins E and C.

Silymarin appears to be incorporated into cell membranes and increases the resistance of the membranes against injurious influences.

I personally take milk thistle tincture daily, and in fact, taking it just now is what inspired me to create this post. I am currently taking this one from . I attend all of their webinars and I know they know their stuff, so I trust their products. 👍🏼

Herbal spotlight: Passion flower 💜💛

Passion flower, or Passiflora incarnata, is a member of the passifloracea family. The leaf, roots, and vines are used medicinally. It is a cooling and relaxing herb and is a useful antispasmodic, hypotensive, sedative, anti-inflammatory, cerebral vasorelaxant, and anticonvulsant.

Passion flower is a relaxing nervine that can be helpful in alleviating heart palpitations, muscle twitching, restless agitation, nervousness, and sleep disturbances. Passion flower brings a sense of calmness and acts as an antidepressant. It can be used for tremors, tics, and convulsions.

A double-blind randomized trial compared passion flower with the sedative oxazepam, showing it was just as effective as the big pharma drug, but with a lower incidence of impairment.

Long term studies show reduction in anxiety and also improvements in memory, with the apparent mechanism involving GABA receptors.

Passion flower is frequently used for epilepsy and studies show that it is effective against pentylenetetrazol-induced seizures, due to opioid and GABA receptor activity.

The constituents harmine and telepathine act as MAO inhibitors and thereby increase serotonin in the brain.

Passion flower is contraindicated in pregnancy because it can stimulate the uterus.

This account has really been growing (thank you!) and I’m getting a lot of messages asking who I am/how I got into holistic health, so I shall explain.

I grew up wanting to be a psychiatrist. Because I wanted to go to medical school, I studied my butt off to get straight As and graduated high school as valedictorian.

I attended the University of Alabama (🐘❤️🏈) and earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology. I loved all my psychology classes. However, while I was in college, THREE of my close friends committed su***de. All three of them were taking prescribed antidepressants at the time. So I started asking my professors about these medicines, and I kept being told that yes, most antidepressants do have a well-known and documented “suicidal hump,” where they can make you significantly worse before they make you better, especially in adolescents. I started having panic attacks and was prescribed benzodiazepines, and realized these can have awful side effects too!

Needless to say, I was very shaken up and felt like I could never prescribe these drugs to anyone. So I opted out of medical school. I was lost and confused but I knew I couldn’t continue down that path anymore.

I floundered about career-wise for a bit. I took a job doing marketing for a company in Atlanta and quickly got burned out. I decided to move to the beach and sell real estate because if I was going to be marketing someone, I wanted it to be me.

I moved down to Destin on January 1, 2014 and began my real estate journey. A few short years later, I met this hot Marine who jumps out of planes for a living. I fell head over heels, got married, and had a kid.

I have enjoyed real estate; it can be a very lucrative career (especially on 30A!) and it’s fun to tour multimillion dollar beach homes all the time.

But then 2020 happened, and I started realizing that it’s not just benzos and ssris that are bad. 😭💔

I was introduced to naturopathy and something inside me instantly clicked. I could get back to helping people like I always wanted to - without having to prescribe petroleum pills! Our Creator has provided us with what we need to heal our bodies! 🙌🏼

Herbal spotlight: ginkgo 💚

Ginkgo biloba is a great herb for those suffering with poor circulation. Ginkgo increases blood flow to the limbs and brain and is an anti inflammatory and anti thrombotic. The leaves are used medicinally and they have a slightly sour taste.

Clinically, ginkgo is used for cerebral vascular insufficiency and impaired mental performance. It has the ability to increase blood flow to the brain and enhance memory, decrease platelet aggregation, and prevent strokes. It is used for migraines, and may delay mental deterioration in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Ginkgo is used to treat tinnitus, vertigo, and deafness due to poor blood flow. It is also helpful for other conditions associated with poor peripheral blood flow, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, varicose veins, and even erectile dysfunction.

Ginkgo may lengthen a woman’s menstrual flow, or increase a wound’s bleeding, as it does work by increasing blood flow. Bleeding time will return to normal within 10-12 days of discontinuing the herb. Ginkgo is contraindicated in those with hemophilia.
