Well, it’s Feral Friday here on the farm. 🤦🏼♀️ 😂 If you are tired of all the toxic garbage on social media this week & need a fun little self care read, here’s a report from the local clean up crew & chaos critters. *Note: These cool kids are legit feral. They are free to come & go as they please & are not pets. I just enjoy living in the moment & observing them when they visit.*
Rocket Raccoon 🦝 is up to his usual tricks, looking all innocent when he just knocked down one of my (expensive) security cameras. Persimmon the Possum 💕is doing her usual good job of cleaning up the mess others leave behind…looking completely unbothered & totally adorable while she does it. 🦨 Spot the Skunk stopped by for a quick visit on their way through. Thankfully they just wanted to say hello & did not leave their perfume behind.
Fun facts:
Raccoons are highly intelligent, have impressive memory & facial recognition, & amazing dexterity to open latches, jars, & doors. They are mischievous, adaptive, & opportunistic. If you see them dipping their food or hands in water, it isn’t to wash it (they are definitely not that hygienic, lol). They are softening the calloused layer on their paws to feel & memorize the texture of the food they are about to eat, so that they can locate similar foods in the future.
Possums eat ticks, copperheads, & even mice, moles, & rats! They are a valuable all-natural pest control who very rarely carry disease like rabies. They may show their teeth to try to scare you away, but they are not typically aggressive & are much more likely to run away or play dead than to bite you. They have impressive memory span & only live up to 4 years.
Skunks are also helpful to our ecosystem by eating annoying insects & grubs, as well as poisonous snakes & snake eggs! They are resourceful, curious, & are full of personality. If possible, a skunk will give multiple warning signs before they spray (growling, stomping, raising their tail, even doing a handstand!) in order to conserve their scent, as it takes up to a week or more to “recharge” their more well-known, stinky, defense mechanism.
Wishing you a whimsical weekend full of funny moments & happy thoughts.
