May is designated as Healthy Vision Month, an annual observance that prioritizes eye wellness and helps prevent vision loss. With many eye diseases showing no early symptoms, this month highlights the critical need for comprehensive eye exams, routine check-ups, and protective lifestyle habits.
Maintaining clear and healthy eyes involves a combination of medical care, daily habits, and environmental protection:
Schedule a Dilated Eye Exam-
-Routine Care: Do not wait for symptoms to arise. A comprehensive dilated eye exam performed by an eye care professional is the only way to detect serious diseases (such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration) in their early stages.
-Family History: Be sure to discuss your family's eye health history with your doctor, as many hereditary conditions can be tracked and managed.
Adopt Protective Lifestyle Habits-
-Eat a Colorful Diet: Incorporate foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants, such as leafy greens, salmon, carrots, and sweet potatoes, which support overall eye health.
Family
-Stay Active: Regular physical activity helps control blood pressure and manage diabetes, both of which are direct contributors to eye health issues.
-Wear Sunglasses: Always use sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation when you are outdoors.
-Wear Safety Eyewear: Use ANSI-approved safety glasses during high-risk activities, such as sports, yard work, or industrial/construction jobs.
Screen Time & Eye Strain-
-If you work in an office or frequently use digital devices, you may be at risk for computer vision syndrome (digital eye strain).
-The 20-20-20 Rule: Practice giving your eye muscles a break by looking at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
