Reverse Genealogy for African American Family History - Presented by Derrick Mason
Thursday, Feb. 20, 6pm at Morley Library

When researching your family history, you may have always been told to start with what you know and work backwards to find ancestors, but sometimes it's more effective to do the opposite: start with what you know and move forward to find descendants. This technique can be helpful for filling gaps in the family tree or when you've hit a brick wall while working backwards. This free presentation on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 6pm by professional genealogist Derrick Mason will showcase methods for verifying familial ties and expanding family lines using reverse genealogy techniques, with an emphasis on African American family history. Register at www.morleylibrary.org.

The New Connecticut Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) asked us to share their announcement below:

America250 is a nonpartisan initiative working to engage every American in commemorating the 250th anniversary of our country. This multi-year effort, from now through July 4, 2026, offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation's past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.

The U. S. Semiquincentennial Commission, established by Congress in 2016 is charged with planning and orchestrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the Unites States. The Commission, chaired by former Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios, is working with America250.org to engage Americans across the country in designing the largest and most inclusive anniversary observance in our nation's history.

In December 2022, members of the New Connecticut Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) voted to place an American250 Marker to honor Lake County Revolutionary War patriots outside the Lake County Courthouse in Painesville, Ohio. New Connecticut members believed that the eighty-six men buried in Lake County who fought for our country's independence should be permanently honored. New Connecticut Chapter, NSDAR subsequently sought funding from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the Western Reserve Junior Service League, and numerous individual donors to purchase the bronze America250 Marker and the individual engraved bricks to honor each patriot known to be buried in Lake County. The America250 Patriots Marker was dedicated July 4, 2023 with the ceremony serving as the official start of America250 celebrations in Lake County. The America250 Patriots Marker is the first memorial in Lake County dedicated to honor those who served in our country's fight for independence.

The New Connecticut Chapter, NSDAR has remained committed to continue to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our country. Members have created an ongoing display of prominent Lake County Revolutionary War patriots. Each of these patriots made Lake County their home and made significant contributions to the establishment of many of our communities in Lake County. These patriots are being honored with individual biographies on display boards that are being placed throughout Lake County in public venues from January 2024 through July 2026.

The Genealogy Room at Morley Library will be a host site for this ongoing exhibit beginning September 2024. Stop by and learn more about the first patriots to be honored - Asa Turney, an early Madison resident and Abraham Skinner, a pioneer proprietor of Fairport Harbor.
