Happy 4th of July! With the festivities ramping up this week, we would like to caution you as you and your loved ones as you celebrate the holiday and attend events that have fireworks!
Did you know that fireworks and firecrackers can register 150 decibels at only 3 feet away?
Dr. Lucky Nanduri states "noise at these levels can cause permanent damage in less than one second. It's important for families, including those with babies to understand this as they travel to see the various fireworks displays around the area."
Dr. Nanduri recommends that you:
1. Wear hearing protection, like foam earplugs. Available at NO charge in our office or available at many drugstores.
2. Maintain a safe distance. Stand at least 500 feet away from any fireworks display.
3. Observe noise warnings. Did you know that many smartphones and smartwatches will automatically alert you when you are in a loud enough location that can cause damage to your hearing?
4. Take listening breaks. Step out regularly if you are in a noisy place for an extended period of time.
5. Understand your body. If you experience any pain or ringing in your ears or changes in your hearing, exit the area. If the symptoms persist the next day or two, call our office at 847-358-2896 for a hearing evaluation.
