A manufacturer of custom precision optical components and imaging solutions since 1988, Midwest Optical Systems - MidOpt - is recognized as the world’s leading resource for off-the-shelf and custom machine vision filters, lenses and accessories used in industrial imaging applications. MidOpt has an extensive history in optical component design, fabrication and inspection, and continues to develop

innovative new products for industrial imaging that are simply not found elsewhere. Industries served: machine vision, security, surveillance, LPR, scientific, bio-medical and NDVI. MidOpt’s complete line of filters cover the visible, near-infrared and UV spectrums. They represent the easiest, most cost effective method for insuring the reliability, stability and repeatability of industrial imaging systems. MidOpt filters are rugged; environmentally stable; heat and solvent resistant; non-hygroscopic and oleophobic, and are easy to maintain. Various designs are available for use in:

· Refining color recognition and improving separation of subject matter
· Ease viewing of desired features through contrast enhancement
· Elimination of glare or hot spots from highly reflective surfaces
· Saving cost, space and system maintenance and start-up time by eliminating the need for shrouding
· Protecting camera lenses and lighting from dust, scratching and inhospitable environments
· Enhancing lens resolving capability by greatly reducing chromatic aberrations.
· Boosting system speed and efficiency while substantially decreasing false accepts/false rejects.
· Reducing required luminous intensity, thereby saving on lighting cost and maximizing the lifespan of LED or other light sources. MidOpt offers the largest variety of threaded filter mount sizes and types in stock ranging from M13.25 to M105. MidOpt filters can be fastened to any camera lens with the appropriate mounting solution.

🌙 See Clearly at Night with A/R Coatings

Nighttime imaging presents unique challenges. One of the most common complaints? The distracting “halo” or “starburst” effect around headlights.

Anti-reflection coated lenses can make a huge difference by:
- Reducing reflections
- Minimizing glare
- Improving contrast in white (visible) light

The result: Sharper, clearer night vision and better overall image quality.

Even the best anti-reflection coatings can’t make up for poor substrate performance.

🔍 While AR coatings can boost transmission up to 99%, the glass itself matters. If the substrate only allows 88%, that’s your starting point – and thicker glass means even more loss.

When precision and brightness matter, choose filters with optimized substrate thickness to ensure your system gets the light it needs.

Efficiency begins at the core.

Every time light hits glass, about 4% is lost to reflection – per surface. That adds up fast in machine vision systems.

🔍 MidOpt® filters feature advanced AR (anti-reflection) coatings that reduce surface reflection to less than 1%.

The result?
✅ Higher transmission
🎯 Enhanced contrast
👻 Elimination of ghost images

Greater efficiency. Sharper results. Smarter design.

Visualize the Difference: Precision in Every Wavelength

In the image, you’ll see two filters superimposed over a monochromatic LED’s spectral output:
⚫ MidOpt® Bandpass Filter (red line)
⚫ Traditional Bandpass Filter (gray line)

Here’s how to see the difference:
1️⃣ Count the number of squares outside the LED curve with the traditional filter – that’s unwanted, interfering light.
2️⃣ Now do the same with the MidOpt® filter – notice the tighter fit? Less interference, greater contrast, and sharper results.

That’s the MidOpt® advantage – performance you can see.

💡 Why Filter Shape Matters

Not all filters are created equal. Some have a flat, high transmission profile that lets too much ambient light sneak in – especially at the tail ends of the LED’s output curve.

MidOpt® Bandpass Filters are different. They’re designed to emulate the bell-shaped (Gaussian) spectral output curve of the most common LEDs – matching the passband’s position, height and width for maximum performance and minimal noise.

Better alignment = better contrast, better control.

👉 Learn more: https://midopt.com/gaussian-transmission-curve/

The spectral output from a single color LED light source used in any vision application typically follows a normal Gaussian or “bell shape” profile. For a machine vision bandpass filter to be most effective, the position, height and width of the passband should approximate this bell-shaped curve...
