From Coast to Coast: California Practitioners Travel to Florida for Hyperbaric Certification

This week, we had the honor of welcoming a group of passionate healthcare practitioners all the way from Santa Monica, California to our very own Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine Training Center in sunny St Augustine, Florida! These dedicated professionals made the cross-country journey to dive deep—literally and figuratively—into the world of hyperbaric medicine, earning certification in the safe and efficient operation of a hyperbaric facility.

The training was part of our IBUM Principles of Hyperbaric Medicine Course, a robust program designed to equip providers with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to deliver high-quality hyperbaric care. While earning AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ some of the core topics covered include:

Hyperbaric chamber safety protocols and emergency procedures

Physics and physiology of hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Mechanisms of action and approved clinical indications

Risk management, oxygen toxicity, and patient monitoring

Regulatory standards, documentation, and Medicare compliance

These practitioners didn’t just show up—they showed out, bringing curiosity, collaboration, and an eagerness to master the science behind this powerful therapy. We're incredibly proud of their commitment and the trust they placed in our team to provide world-class training.

At the Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine Training Center, we believe that excellence in care starts with excellence in education. Our mission is simple: to ensure that the hyperbaric industry is staffed by confident, competent professionals with comprehensive training and ongoing support.

Welcome to the IBUM-certified family—your patients are in great hands!

🛡️ Choosing a Safe Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Facility: Why NFPA 99 Standards Matter 🛡️

When it comes to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), safety is paramount. The National Fire Protection Association's NFPA 99 standards set crucial guidelines for the construction, maintenance, and operation of hyperbaric facilities to ensure patient and staff safety.

Here are 12 key safety guidelines to look for when selecting a reputable HBOT facility:

1️⃣ No Cell Phones or Electronic Devices — These pose a serious fire risk inside the chamber.

2️⃣ Cotton Gowns & Cotton Bedding — Natural fibers minimize static electricity buildup and reduce fire hazards.

3️⃣ Grounding Straps — Patients may be fitted with a grounding strap to safely discharge any static buildup.

4️⃣ Fire-Resistant Chamber Construction — Materials must meet strict NFPA 99 fire safety standards.

5️⃣ Emergency Shut-Off Systems — Designed to safely depressurize the chamber if needed.

6️⃣ Backup Oxygen Supply — Ensures patients can continue treatment safely during power interruptions.

7️⃣ Continuous Air Monitoring — To ensure oxygen levels remain stable and within safe limits.

8️⃣ Proper Staff Training — All staff should be certified in hyperbaric safety protocols.

9️⃣ Daily Equipment Inspections — Regular checks ensure valves, seals, and pressure gauges are in perfect working order.

🔟 Fire Suppression System — Specialized systems are designed to extinguish potential fires inside or near the chamber.

1️⃣1️⃣ Careful Construction — Contractors should follow precise NFPA 99 protocols for design to ensure patient safety.

1️⃣2️⃣ Strict Clothing & Accessory Rules — No petroleum-based lotions, hair products, or synthetic fabrics are allowed inside the chamber.

Choosing a facility that follows NFPA 99 standards is the best way to ensure your treatment is both safe and effective. Don’t hesitate to ask your HBOT provider about their safety protocols — your well-being depends on it.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has emerged as a promising treatment for patients suffering from the long-term effects of COVID-19, often referred to as "Long COVID" or Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). Many individuals with Long COVID experience persistent symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, and joint pain, which can significantly impact their quality of life. HBOT involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which enhances the body’s natural healing processes by increasing oxygen levels in the blood and tissues. This can be particularly beneficial for Long COVID patients, as the increased oxygen supply may help reduce inflammation, promote tissue repair, and improve oxygen delivery to areas of the body that are suffering from chronic hypoxia due to the virus's effects.

The mechanisms of action for HBOT in treating Long COVID are multifaceted and target several underlying factors contributing to the persistence of symptoms. One of the key mechanisms is the reduction of inflammation, which is often elevated in Long COVID patients due to an overactive immune response triggered by the virus. HBOT has been shown to decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines and enhance anti-inflammatory pathways, which can help alleviate symptoms like joint pain and fatigue. Additionally, HBOT improves mitochondrial function, which is crucial for energy production in cells. By enhancing mitochondrial activity, HBOT may help combat the severe fatigue and muscle weakness commonly reported by Long COVID sufferers.

Another important benefit of HBOT is its potential to improve cognitive function in Long COVID patients, who frequently report issues such as brain fog and memory problems. The therapy increases oxygen delivery to the brain, which can help repair and regenerate neural tissues damaged by the virus or by the body’s prolonged inflammatory response. Enhanced oxygenation can also promote neurogenesis, the formation of new neurons, and improve cerebral blood flow, which may alleviate cognitive symptoms. By addressing both the inflammatory and hypoxic components of Long COVID, HBOT offers a comprehensive approach to managing this complex and often debilitating condition.
