Taíno Presence at the Gathering of Nations Powwow

Each April, Taíno people actively participate in the Gathering of Nations Powwow, the largest Indigenous gathering in North America, held in Albuquerque. Taíno dancers, artisans, and singers travel from Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland to affirm survival, visibility, and solidarity with Native nations across Turtle Island. Their presence challenges the long-standing myth of Taíno “extinction” and asserts continuity in living, evolving culture.

Participation is both ceremonial and contemporary. Taíno delegates join the Grand Entry—when nations are called into the sacred circle—signaling recognition within the wider Indigenous community. Cultural exchange includes traditional dancing (often marked by a left-foot stomp to call ancestors) and “New Taíno” crafts that blend ancestral forms with modern tools. The powwow has become a key meeting place for alliance-building and community cohesion.

In 2026, the Gathering of Nations is scheduled for the fourth weekend of April and announced as the final event in Albuquerque after 43 years. Taíno representation is often coordinated through the United Confederation of Taíno Peoples, which also advocates for Indigenous visibility at international forums. The message is clear: Taíno culture endures—present, connected, and recognized.
