🐾 Let’s Clear Up the Confusion: Service Dogs vs. Therapy Dogs 🐾
We’ve been seeing a lot of confusion lately, so we wanted to gently — but clearly — explain the difference between a Service Dog and a Therapy Dog. Words, training, and honesty matter.
✨ SERVICE DOG
• Individually trained to perform specific tasks that mitigate a person’s disability
• Protected under the ADA
• Has public access rights
• Works with and for one handler
• Is working — not visiting
🦮 THERAPY DOG
• Trained to provide comfort and emotional support to others
• Visits places like schools, nursing homes, and children’s hospitals
• Works by invitation only
• Does not have public access rights
• Requires evaluation and certification through therapy organizations
🐾 About Hopey
Hopey did take the classes to become a certified therapy dog. We chose to do that so she would be prepared and qualified to visit schools, nursing homes, and children’s hospitals.
However — her main and most important job is being a trained service dog for her Crazy Mommy. That is her daily work and her primary role.
🐾 Important reminder
Buying a vest does not make a dog a service dog.
Buying a vest does not make a dog a therapy dog.
Both roles require training, evaluation, and responsibility.
Misrepresenting a dog as a service animal:
• hurts people with real disabilities
• puts working dogs at risk
• and can carry legal ramifications and fines under state and federal laws
Please don’t mix them up. Education protects everyone.
Thank you for helping spread awareness, respect, and kindness — especially for those who truly rely on their dogs every single day.
🐾 Stay pawsitive. Have hope. Always be kind.
