Dry eye can sometimes go undiagnosed prior to cataract surgery. Some potential concerns are:

💦 Delayed Visual Recovery- The presence of ocular surface irregularities, such as epithelial defects or punctate epithelial erosions, can cause blurred vision and discomfort, prolonging the healing process.

💦Suboptimal Refractive Outcome - Dry eye-related corneal irregularities, such as irregular astigmatism and higher-order aberrations, can affect the accuracy of lens calculations prior to cataract surgery. This can result residual refractive error potentially requiring the need for correction with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.

💦Persistent Discomfort - Dry eye symptoms such as burning, stinging, and foreign body sensation can worsen after cataract surgery, impairing patient satisfaction and quality of life. The use of postoperative medications, including topical antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, can exacerbate dry eye symptoms in susceptible individuals.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommendations for yearly exams:

✨Adults over the age of 65
✨Patients with Diabetes
✨Individuals with family history of ocular disease such as glaucoma or macular degeneration

Some patients with high risk of developing ocular disease may be recommended to have more frequent follow up based on their particular risk factors.
