Most people blame their back/neck and extremity pain on one bad moment. A heavy lift. A long flight. A bad night's sleep. But after 50 years of treating thousands of patients, I can tell you the truth: it is never just one moment. It is 24 hours of pressure, stacked day after day, week after week, month after months, year after year, decade after decade. The force that we are talking about is gravity compressing your body into the ground 24/7 with no real break in between. Your discs and joints compress and they both need relief. Your nerves need room to breathe. But sitting/standing/activities of daily living/occupational hazards/sports improperly compresses them. Sleeping in the wrong position compresses them. Even resting the wrong way keeps the pressure on. My goal and yours should be how do we treat these conditions so they improve as time goes on.
