Introducing Susan Lee, LCSW

With more than 35 years of experience as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I help individuals and families navigate life’s challenges with compassion, insight, and practical strategies. I earned both my bachelor's and master’s degrees in Social Work in 1991 and have been a licensed practitioner since 1995.
My career has spanned a wide range of settings—medical social work, high-acuity mental health, forensic treatment in a high-security prison, comprehensive addiction recovery, and private practice. Early in my career, I supported patients and caregivers facing serious and life-changing illnesses, developing a deep commitment to helping older adults and families address age-related transitions with dignity, acceptance, and resilience.
As community mental health resources declined in the 1990s, my work expanded to include individuals with severe mental illness and complex behavioral needs. I later spent 15 years in a high-security correctional facility, specializing in the treatment of serious mental illness and personality disorders—work that strengthened my ability to address trauma, entrenched behavioral patterns, and emotional dysregulation with both empathy and structure.
I subsequently provided care in an integrated addiction treatment program, supporting clients across all stages of recovery. Throughout my career, I have maintained a private practice serving diverse populations through a personalized, solution-focused approach.
My therapeutic style blends Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with validation, gentle challenge, and supportive humor. I aim to help clients better understand themselves, strengthen coping skills, and create sustainable change while feeling heard, respected, and empowered. My approach is compassionate, pragmatic, and grounded in the belief that growth begins with being genuinely seen and accepted.

There is help for your past trauma.

New Day Psychiatry is now offering Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Understanding ART
Accelerated Resolution Therapy®(ART) is a brief, structured form of psychotherapy that helps people process distressing memories and symptoms by changing how those memories are stored in the brain. ART removes triggers by erasing negative images from view. ART uses guided eye movements and visualization techniques to reduce emotional and physical reactions to past experiences while allowing you to stay fully in control. Many clients report significant relief in just a few sessions. Trauma and many other issues can often be resolved in just one session.

What to Expect
ART sessions are typically 60 minutes and follow a step-by-step process guided by a trained clinician. You do not need to describe your trauma in detail to benefit. The therapist will guide you through visualization and gentle eye movements to help your brain reprocess distressing images or sensations safely and effectively.

How ART Helps
Clinical studies have shown ART to be effective for trauma-related symptoms, anxiety, depression, grief, phobias, and more. It may be especially useful for those who have not experienced relief from other therapies, such as Cognitive Processing Therapy or Prolonged Exposure.

Key Benefits
• Brief and focused; many clients experience relief within one session.
• No detailed retelling of trauma is required; making it easier for both therapist and client.
• Clients remain in control throughout the session.
• Can address a wide range of emotional and physical symptoms.
• Evidence-based and trauma-informed.

Please join me in welcoming Susanna Huhtamaki, APRN to New Day Psychiatry. She comes with many years of experience as a nurse practitioner.

We take pride in providing each client with personalized, evidence-based psychiatric care. We strive to create a welcoming, respectful and safe environment.

We understand that each client is unique and complex. We also understand that you are affected by family and relationship issues, medical concerns, work-related stressors, and even spiritual issues. We strive to incorporate all aspects of your life to develop a treatment plan personalized to your needs.

Our practice is about creating a partnership with our clients that allows them to become active participants and contributors to their own care. I believe that individuals are best served when they are informed of, and allowed to evaluate their treatment options.

We are happy to serve those interested in medication management. Those looking for therapy will be given my personalized recommendations for local therapists which may include one in our practice. Based on your preference, we can collaborate with your current therapist to formulate a comprehensive plan for treatment.
