After noting a potential link to a rare cancer, the FDA requested a voluntary recall of a specific type of breast implant. The Daytona Beach News-Journal features one of Dr. Cashio's amazing patients! Ramona Lamascola, Palm Coast resident & retired nurse from New York, had skin cancer on her scalp. Dr. Cashio performed the reconstructive surgeries for her melanoma & basal cell carcinoma, including a skin graft from her left hip.

Ramona's skin cancer diagnosis came as a total shock to her - she didn't have a family history of cancer. She did have a lot of sun exposure in her youth though - she reflected about how she would go to the roof of her building in New York – what they affectionately called "tar beach" - and tan with baby oil & iodine, not knowing the dangerous impact this could have.

Now, Ramona is thankful AdventHealth Daytona Beach created a free education training for hairstylists to learn to recognize the signs of skin cancer. The hairstylists are not diagnosing skin cancer, but rather alerting clients to anything potentially abnormal on their scalp they might not see and then encouraging them to see a doctor.
