The residents enjoyed an exciting evening watching their local hockey team, The Firebirds, play. The arena is the first of its kind in the Coachella Valley, so they knew they had to go to a game before the season was over. Boy, did they pick one of the best games to attend! The game went into overtime with a shoot-out to determine the winner...The Firebirds! They are looking forward to watching many more games next season. !

At The Carlotta, creating Extraordinary Outings for our residents is one of our guiding principles. These outings go beyond everyday trips to local community attractions or shopping centers. As we know, the last three years have kept us from enjoying even the simplest of excursions. As we navigate the new post-covid world, our quest is to return to the basics and experience the simple joys of life. Our first big adventure was to the local cinema. Sure that might not sound so exciting, but when you rent out a private theatre to watch an uplifting movie, it’s a game changer! Seeing 80 for Brady, a film about lifelong friendships that makes you both laugh and cry, well, that makes it extraordinary. Thirty people signed up to attend the special screening. They consisted of residents, family members, longtime friends, and associates. Some of the residents commented on how they hadn't been to the movies since the start of the pandemic and couldn't wait to have movie theater popcorn and soda. Others invited their longtime friends, giggled through the whole movie, and chatted about how they could relate to the ladies from the film. We even had a mother-daughter duo sign-up because they are huge Patriot fans. The afternoon at the movies was a success...despite the cost of popcorn!

February is the month of love and doing acts of kindness. We got into the swing of things with all the special programs offered. The month started with residents in our Assisted Living creating personal Valentine's Day Cards for various charities. Eighty cards were made in early February, with a majority donated to the local Meal on Wheels program for distribution with Valentine’s Day deliveries.

Cupid made special Valentine's deliveries to Residents throughout The Carlotta. Residents and family members sent roses, cards and boxed chocolates to their ‘special someone’ in a benefit fundraiser for Watermark for Kids. The special Valentines were delivered on Valentine's Day during an impressive, three-course Candlelight Dinner in The Mark Restaurant. Residents were dressed to the nines and attended a cocktail hour with hors d'oeuvres and an exceptional entertainer before heading into The Mark. Many residents commented on how special the night was, recalling everything from the decorations, the recognition and, of course, the delicious meal.

Dining Services Director Shane held his first of many planned Watermark University offerings. In this “Trendy Wines” presentation, he shared with us the latest wines trending in high-end restaurants. Residents sampled three different wines: Duckhorn Napa Valley Chardonnay, Justin Cabernet, and The Prisoner of Saldo Zinfandel. Before each sample, Shane discussed how the wine was made, which notes to detect, and what type of food it paired well with. At the end of the program, residents took home handouts about the wines and a mini charcuterie takeaway.

We officially welcome our new neighbors to the community. It was a full house, with everyone eager to meet their new neighbors. While some new residents have already joined programs, others wait until they finish unpacking to get into the fun. The theme for the event was Chinese New Year, so residents enjoyed some delicious appetizers and spirits.

It was a great turnout at the Community Life Open House. Existing and new clubs set up booths to distribute flyers about their clubs and sign residents up. Two new programs emerged from this open house, and other groups saw an increase in participation. This event could not have been a success without all of the hard work of the Special Events Committee. This committee's focus is to help residents thrive in our community by helping implement new and fun offerings.

Scenes From a Very Merry Carlotta Christmas Parade

As we wrap up, or unwrap as the case may be, the Christmas Season we thought it would be nice to share some photos of our 3rd Annual Carlotta Holiday Parade. This year's Grand Marshall was Palm Desert Mayor Kathleen Kelly. A special thanks to the families and Carlotta associates who made it the best Carlotta Holiday Parade so far.

Lefse - Watermark University

The Lefse Making Watermark University class, led by instructor Lori Ramhoff and son Reed was a special holiday treat. Making Lefse is an age-old Norwegian holiday tradition. It's a paper-thin flatbread, made from potatoes and cooked on a griddle, flipped with a long, narrow wooden stick, and eaten slathered with butter, sugar and sometimes cinnamon. When the fire alarm sounds, the Lefse is ready! Whoops!
