Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in November. This month is dedicated to honoring the cultures, histories, and contributions of American Indians and Alaskan Natives, while also recognizing the present-day challenges they face.

The origins of this month grew from an initial proclamation in September 1915, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognizing Indians as citizens. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November as “National American Indian Heritage Month.”

Since 1994, similar proclamations under variants on the name have been issued each year, including Native American Heritage Month and National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month (NativeAmericanHeritageMonth.gov).

Over the next few weeks, we will share health equity resources from the Alliance and other sources to help providers increase awareness of, access to, and quality of care for eligible Native American individuals and communities.

This week is Palliative and Advanced Care Week!

Palliative care provides an extra layer of support for patients and their families. It helps patients have a higher quality of life while receiving treatment for serious illness. Palliative care also helps patients’ doctors talk to one another, promoting coordinated care that optimizes the patient experience. At any stage of serious illness, palliative care can help.

Today is National Family Caregiver Day! The Alliance is excited to join this longstanding day of celebration as National Care at Home Month celebrates and supports paid and unpaid caregivers, building on the existing work of National Family Caregivers Month by the Caregiver Action Network, among others.

National Family Caregivers Month – celebrated each November — is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. Celebrating family caregivers enables all of us to:
◻ Raise awareness of family caregiver issues
◻ Celebrate the efforts of family caregivers
◻ Educate family caregivers about self-identification
◻ Increase support for family caregivers
◻ Reduce feelings of isolation

Thank you to the many millions of caregivers nationwide who make professional home care possible. The Alliance will increase its focus on advocacy on behalf of paid and unpaid caregivers in the months and years ahead!
