Why Would Someone Consider Self-Pay Therapy When They Have Insurance?

You might wonder why someone would choose to pay for their therapy sessions out of pocket (self-pay) when they have insurance that might cover part or most of the cost. In fact, there are some very good reasons that paying for mental health therapy directly is a better choice. Here are some of the benefits of self-pay therapy:

More Flexibility
You can see your therapist more often and for longer sessions.

More Privacy
Your therapist is not bound by insurance company restrictions, so you can talk about anything you want without fear of being denied coverage.

More Time and Attention
Self-Pay therapists can give you more time and attention because they don’t have to see large numbers of clients to make up for low reimbursement rates from insurance companies.

More Control
You can choose your therapist based on their experience and approach, rather than being limited to those who are in your insurance network.

More Affordable
Self-pay therapists often charge less than insurance-based therapists.

More Privacy
The content of your therapy sessions and your mental health diagnosis is not available in insurance company databases.

Increased Insurance Rates
Your mental health diagnosis remains private, and is not available to insurance companies. A mental health diagnosis can affect the rates of many different types of insurance products, including life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance, long-term care insurance, and Medicare supplemental Insurance.

Conclusion
If you are considering therapy, I encourage you to explore all of your options. Self-pay therapy may be a good choice for you if you value flexibility, privacy, time and attention, control, affordability, privacy, and lower insurance rates.

For therapy to be effective it needs not only be the right kind of therapy for your issue, but to be explained in a way that makes sense to you. The therapist needs to be someone you can relate to easily and that you trust. Someone that respects you, cares about you, and believes you are capable of improving your life. Client-friendly therapy combines powerful effective therapy with the therapist's belief in the client's natural drive towards health, happiness, and wholeness. The result is empowered clients who reach their therapy goals!

Panic attacks can be frightening and debilitating. When people fear having panic attacks they often begin to gradually restrict their activities by avoiding certain places or even by staying home more often. The good news is that panic attacks can be successfully treated with therapy. Usually no medication is required, although if you are using medication it can be incorporated into the therapy. Typically, clients master the emotions causing their panic attacks and after a relatively brief course of therapy no longer require medication and rarely have additional panic attacks.
