Not all surgeons who perform aesthetic procedures have the same training or qualifications. Hereโs what you should know:
๐จโโ๏ธ Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon
โข Completed 6โ8+ years of surgical residency, including accredited plastic surgery training.
โข Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) โ the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) for plastic surgery.
โข Trained in both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, breasts, and body.
โข Must meet rigorous standards, ongoing education, and ethical requirements to maintain certification.
๐จโโ๏ธ โCosmetic Surgeonโ
โข This title is not the same as board certification in plastic surgery.
โข Any physician (even outside of surgery specialties) can call themselves a โcosmetic surgeonโ after short training courses.
โข They may not have completed accredited plastic surgery residency or certification through the ABPS.
๐ก Why it Matters: Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon means choosing a surgeon who has undergone years of specialized training, rigorous testing, and ongoing education to ensure safe, high-quality results.
โก๏ธ Tip for patients: Always ask your surgeon, โAre you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?โ
