People often ask me: „How does it feel to be hypnotized?“
Hypnosis is a natural, altered state of consciousness, where the brain waves are slowing down just like they do for resting and going to sleep. In fact, every night as we go to sleep we pass through this kind of trance state, just that nobody is there giving us suggestions.
So when you are in this state of consciousness, the conscious mind is still present, and you are aware of what is happening - and the subconscious mind is wide open and easily accepts suggestions for your personal benefit.
It is very relaxing to be in a hypnotic state and you might experience a distorted sense of time. You actually slip into a hypnotic state several times during the day, for example when daydreaming. Or if you ever were on the highway and missed your exit or arrived at your destination and cannot remember how you got there, you were in a hypnotic state. Your subconscious mind had taken over.
Another example of hypnosis that you most likely experience often is when watching TV. Now imagine you are sitting there relaxing and watching and your phone is ringing somewhere in the house and you can still hear it, but are not inclined to get up - you are probably in a light state of hypnosis. Now let‘s say the phone is right next to you and you don‘t even feel like moving your arm to pick it up, then you are in a deeper state of hypnosis. And if the same phone is ringing and you don‘t even notice it, you are in a deep state of hypnosis or entered the sleep state.
I hope that you now have a better understanding of this natural, altered state that you can use for your benefit, to break up old habits and create new, healthy ones. Next week I will be talking about another important question - are you still in control when being hypnotized?
Psychology Today describes how people feel in hypnosis similarly:
The experience of a hypnotic trance is not so unusual...
