Happy Mother’s Day!

10/12/2024

Time to Monday morning quarterback our hurricane readiness. Overall I’d give us an A-. Almost all of our plans worked as we had hoped. The emergency lights we bought for each room did not work how I had hoped. We could have had more battery operated lights on hand. A more powerful portable generator that runs on propane would have made life easier. Luckily we were able to borrow one and we will be purchasing one before next hurricane season. Disposable bowls for soup and cereal are a must have! Other than those minor issues, everything came together and worked fairly seamlessly. The staff was able to adapt and overcome which is the most importantly thing, but when dealing with an already challenging situation the less hurdles you have in your way the better.
Thank you again to the emergency team! A++ for them. They kept the mood in the building calm and relaxed and upbeat. They understood the assignment!
Thank you to all those that helped us get prepared and recover after the storm. Your contributions, whether it was showing up to help board windows, dropping off coffee, helping to clean up the parking lot, or even just words of encouragement, those are the things that got us through this challenge. When the next one comes (many, many, many years from now) we’ll be even better prepared!

And God said, “Let there be light…”
Accordia Woods is back up and running under full power!

10/11/2024

As of 9:15am on Friday October 11th we are still running on generator power.
We don’t have all our creature comforts (TV, internet, etc.) but we have all the essentials, hot food, AC, hot water.
We do not have a repair estimate from the power company but I am seeing power restored around us so I’m hopeful it’s getting closer to coming on.

We are still running on generator power but everyone is doing well. We had no visible damage to the facility just a lot of debris to clean up. Seeing the pictures on the news, I consider us very fortunate. I hope you all fared as well as us.
We will send out an update when power is restored.

We’re a little over 5 hours without power. Our generator is still running and our residents are still sleeping comfortably. The winds have basically subsided and the rain has stopped. We will assess the exterior when the sun comes up in a few hours. It’s being reported that power is already being restored to certain areas so hopefully we will have power sometime later today.
Praying for all those who were in the storms path.

We lost power about 15 minutes ago. Our generator is functioning properly. The residents are sound asleep and comfortable in their beds and staff will be doing 30 minute bed checks throughout the night. The worst of the storm seems to have passed by. We can hear some occasional gusts but not like it was an hour ago!

The EXTREME WIND WARNING has expired and the NWS says they will not extend it inland as the highest gust so far was at Egmont at 105 mph. Wind gusts of 70-95 mph are still possible as the storm moves inland.

10/10/2024

We’ve had a few significant power flickers but the lights have come back on each time. I don’t expect that to hold up through the night, but one can hope!
At dinner we walked our residents through what to expect during the storm and how we would handle a power outage. The residents are remarkably calm. Most are sleeping now or getting ready for bed. Hopefully this will be just another night for them.
Kudos to our staff who are handling everything with absolute aplomb. True professionals!!!

Weather conditions continue to deteriorate, but we are all comfortable inside and our power has stayed on, no flickers yet but I expect that to change. We put sandbags across the portico but so far we have not had any issues with our storm drains clearing the water. Still praying for the best!

Meet your Hurricane Milton emergency staff! Melissa, Cathy, Betty, Ieshia and Lori! I can’t say enough about these women, I’m grateful to have them here. These ladies will make the best of a tough situation, your loved ones are in good hands!

Later today we will be sandbagging the entrance to our portico. We have never had an issue but it is a precaution we take in case runoff from Curlew overwhelms our storm drains. I'm not expecting a lot of visitors today but I wanted to put out a warning to any Thrill Seekers who might be tempted to stop by during the storm!
Be Safe!!!
