WHEN YOU MOVE, YOUR LYMPH MOVES!!!

Some of the best things you can do to maintain a healthy lymphatic system are things you are already doing every day and one of the most important is simply movement. We already know movement benefits our joints, and it’s just as essential for the lymphatic system. Gentle, low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, Tai Chi, and yoga are all excellent options, though they may not suit everyone. Fortunately, small movements throughout the day can be just as effective. Try doing ten ankle pumps while reading emails, pedaling on a small desk bike for five minutes, or performing toe raises while standing at the kitchen sink.

Research show the key isn’t just exercise itself—it’s frequency. Five minutes of movement every hour adds up to 40 minutes by the end of the day, which is far more beneficial for lymphatic flow than a single intense workout. The bottom line: many small efforts add up to big benefits. At Lymphedema Specialists, we design exercise programs tailored to an individual's skill level and integrate exercising into your daily routine so it is convenient and doesn't requires a trip to the gym. So the next time you are standing at your sink - do 10 toe raises!!!!

THE BENEFITS OF AQUATIC THERAPY FOR LYMPHEDEMA MANAGEMENT

Pool therapy offers multiple physiological and functional benefits especially for those with lower extremity lymphedema. There are many published studies that support the benefits of water therapy, including reduction of limb volume immediately after water therapy sessions. The pressure from the water (also called hydrostatic pressure) is a natural source of compression. The buoyancy of water can reduce weight-bearing stress on painful legs up to 50% at waist deep water and up to 80% in chest deep water. The reduced strain on joints allows for improvement in range of motion with decreased discomfort. The water also provides gentle resistance for strengthening of muscles and the muscle contractions in turn help promote pumping of lymph fluid. Warm water (typically under ~94 °F) is known for relaxing muscles, improving circulation, easing stiffness, improving joint motion, and helping with pain relief. Many people find the water generally soothing and prefer it as a form of exercise for their lymphedema. As with any new therapy, it’s best to consult with your physician or certified lymphedema therapist to determine if it's appropriate and safe for you start an aquatic program.
