Michael’s House is proud to be actively engaged in the community, providing education and support around substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health conditions.

In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month, our team has been visiting local community spaces to share information, raise awareness and promote understanding of the impact of alcohol use on individuals, families and communities.

We remain committed to helping reduce stigma, increasing access to resources and supporting recovery through education and outreach.

We’re excited to welcome Chris Thomas to Michael’s House as our Pride Program Therapist! 🌈

Chris brings over 26 years of experience in behavioral health, with a strong background in substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health. After earning his Master’s Degree in Counseling, he completed his internship right here at Michael’s House in Palm Springs. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, he has worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Chris has developed our Pride Program, which launched in late March/early April—committed to clinical excellence, cultural responsiveness and creating an environment where people feel supported, respected and genuinely cared for as we serve the LGBTQI+ community.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma and share helpful information about recovery.

We’d like to take a moment to provide a brief overview of detox in substance use disorder. Detox is often the first step in recovery, helping individuals safely manage withdrawal, while integrated mental health care supports long-term healing and stability.

Please take a moment to watch our short video on detox at Michael’s House to learn more about how this critical first step can support recovery.

Autism Acceptance Month is an important reminder to move beyond awareness and toward genuine understanding, inclusion and respect. It’s a time to celebrate the strengths, perspectives and individuality of people on the autism spectrum while also recognizing the challenges they may face. By promoting acceptance, we help create communities where neurodiversity is valued, stigma is reduced and everyone has the opportunity to feel seen, supported and empowered to thrive.

Alcohol Awareness Month is an important opportunity to shine a light on the realities of alcohol misuse while reducing stigma and encouraging open, honest conversations. It helps educate individuals and families about the risks of alcohol dependence, the signs to look for and the hope that recovery is possible. By raising awareness, we empower our community to seek help, support one another and celebrate the strength it takes to choose a healthier, sober life.

Please join us in congratulating Michael’s House February Employee of the Month, Dee Weir!

Here’s what her peers and coworkers have to say about her: Dee is truly a one-stop shop—when something needs to get done, she’s the one who makes it happen. Starting as an RC, she has grown within the organization into her role as a Case Manager and hasn’t looked back since.

Dee plays a vital role in keeping the day-to-day operations of our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) running smoothly. From admissions and coordinating resources to facilitating groups, she does it all—often within the same day. Our patients rely on her, and so does the entire IOP team.

Thank you, Dee, for your dedication, hard work and commitment. We appreciate everything you do!

Gratitude plays a powerful role in substance abuse recovery because it shifts focus away from what is missing or painful and toward what is present, meaningful and worth protecting. In early recovery, it’s common to feel overwhelmed by regret, cravings or uncertainty, but practicing gratitude helps ground individuals in the present moment and reminds them of the progress they’ve made—no matter how small. It fosters a more positive mindset, reduces stress and can even counteract the negative thinking patterns that often contribute to relapse. By regularly acknowledging supportive relationships, personal growth and even simple daily victories, individuals build emotional resilience and a deeper sense of purpose, both of which are essential for maintaining long-term sobriety.

Friday's Adventure for outpatient saw the clients getting to partake in the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The Tram can serve as a powerful metaphor for substance abuse recovery—the journey begins grounded in the desert’s heat and challenges, much like the early stages of sobriety where discomfort and uncertainty are present, but as the tram steadily ascends, the environment shifts, offering cooler air, clearer views and a renewed perspective. This transformation mirrors the recovery process, where with commitment and support, individuals rise above old patterns and gain clarity, distance and hope. The shared experience of the climb reinforces that progress takes time and trust, and reaching the top symbolizes the rewards of perseverance—peace, strength and the realization that a different, healthier way of living is not only possible but within reach.

Who We Are

When Arlene Rosen lost her son Michael to a drug overdose, she started a treatment center so that she could help spare other families from the pain she experienced. Michael’s House opened in 1989 and has been serving patients and their families through comprehensive integrated treatment for nearly three decades.

In 2006, Foundations Recovery Network added Michael’s House to its family of treatment centers, supporting Arlene’s vision and expanding the center to accommodate more patients. Once a facility with 24 beds, Michael’s House now has 120 beds—and has helped countless men and women find the path to long-term recovery from addiction and mental health conditions.
