July is Dry Eye Awareness Month!! Dry eye syndrome (DES) occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Over 16 million Americans are diagnosed with DES, though the real number may be closer to 24 million. Women are nearly twice as likely to develop dry eye, especially during pregnancy or menopause due to hormonal shifts. Risk increases with age—people over 75 are five times more likely to be diagnosed than those under 35.

May is Inherited Retinal Disease (IRD) Genetic Testing Awareness Month, designated by Prevent Blindness to educate the public on inherited retinal diseases and the importance of genetic testing.

Some key facts:

- IRDs are caused by genetic mutations that affect the retina, leading to vision impairment or blindness.

- IRDs cannot be prevented, but genetic testing can help confirm a diagnosis and identify potential treatment options.

- Common IRDs include Retinitis Pigmentosa, Stargardt Disease, Leber Congenital Amaurosis, Cone-rod Dystrophy, and Choroideremia.

- Genetic testing can help determine which gene variants are responsible for an individual's condition, potentially guiding them toward clinical trials or emerging therapies.

Women's Eye Health and Safety Month, observed in April, raises awareness about the unique challenges women face with vision and highlights the importance of prioritizing their eye health, especially given their key role in the family's well-being.

5 Facts About Women's Eye Health:

• Higher Risk for Vision Issues: Women are more likely than men to experience vision problems, including conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.

• Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy and menopause can lead to temporary or chronic eye conditions, such as dry eye syndrome.

• Prevalence of Blindness: Two-thirds of people living with blindness or vision problems in the U.S. are women.

• Impact of Autoimmune Diseases: Autoimmune diseases like lupus and thyroid eye disease disproportionately affect women and can lead to vision complications.

• Preventive Actions: Smoking cessation, regular eye exams, and awareness of family history can significantly reduce the risk of vision loss.
