Eyeballs are always interesting 👀🔬! This is an example of a developmental condition called “Peters anomaly.” The cornea, iris, and lens incompletely separate leading to multiple abnormalities in the eye. This eye is comfortable although visually impaired, surgical treatment is challenging.

Another year of ACVO-Saves (Service Animal Volunteer Eye Screening) in the books! What a two days we had performing free eye exams in Palmer and Anchorage for the service and working dogs of Alaska. So many talented canines performing a wide variety of jobs for their owners…crisis response, search and rescue, medical alert, seeing eye dogs, do it all dogs. An incredible group of animals living in Alaska helping individuals in our community thrive and stay safe. It is our privilege to again ensure these canines have exemplary vision to perform their jobs at a high level.🤩

Super proud of the team today. With a prompt referral from the ER veterinarian, this dog was in and out of our clinic in an hour. There were two thorns, one big thorn and one smaller thorn, that we removed quickly with sedation. The biggest thorn seen in the photos was stuck inside the eye with the base of the thorn in the cornea. With some steady hands and quick work, we expect this eye to make a full recovery! ❤️‍🩹👀🔬

Why do we do what we do? For dogs like Cosmo. This is why I come to work. As an ophthalmologist, we form long-term friendships with owners and their dogs. Recheck after recheck we see owners multiple times per month for long stretches, fighting to give their animal the best treatment outcome. We learn not just about the dogs but about the people. Their health struggles, their life stories, their jobs and hobbies, and how their animals fit into that story. As a veterinarian, we treat the animal but by treating the animal we bring comfort and emotional stability to their people. I first met a blind Cosmo earlier this year and today was the last time I'll see Cosmo, and Cosmo will see me, as his owners move to the lower 48. This was his final recheck with me months post cataract surgery. His owners have fought through their own life challenges but they stayed positive and genuine through it all. Giving much of their energy to Cosmo while Cosmo can now give energy back to them. Safe travels down the Alcan to your new place Cosmo. Bark at anyone and everyone you can see.
