A 2024 study looked at maternal and neonatal outcomes in midwife-attended planned home births versus planned hospital births in Spain.

Researchers analysed data from 3,463 low-risk births between 2016 and 2018, including 2,713 hospital and 750 home births.

They found several differences between the groups, which is often the case in this type of study.

“Women choosing home births typically had higher education levels and were predominantly Spanish. They were 3.43 times more likely to have a spontaneous birth and significantly less likely to undergo instrumental births than those in hospitals.

“Home births were associated with higher utilization of non-pharmacological analgesia and a more pronounced tendency to initiate breastfeeding within the first hour post birth. stronger inclination towards breastfeeding.

“Hospital births, conversely, showed higher use of the lithotomy position and epidural analgesia.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

“There were no significant differences in neonatal outcomes between the two groups.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

The researchers conclude that:

“Home births managed by midwives offered better obstetric and neonatal outcomes for low-risk women than hospital births.

"These results suggest home birth as a safe, viable option that promotes natural birthing processes and reduces medical interventions.

"The study supports the integration of midwife-led home birth into public health policies, affirming its benefits for maternal and neonatal health.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

We have added this to the ever-growing list of studies evidencing the safety of home birth on our home birth information hub.

Did you know that there are a couple of studies that show that keeping track of your baby’s movements in the third trimester can reduce stillbirth by 30%? And it can be even more effective than ultrasounds! Look up the Norway study on kick counts. This is the app that we recommend. Not only does it keep track of movements, but it keeps track of how strong the movements are. How cool is that!?

New Life

Three years ago, if you would have asked me my midwifery story, I would not have known what to say. I was wondering if my dream of having a birthcenter was over. I was very sad. I was at the peak of trying to get out of a very unhealthy partnership in a birthcenter that I co-owned. That birthcenter I thought was my dream. I was dying to my dream. My practice was shrinking and I was having to face my biggest fear: that perhaps it wasn’t in the plan for me to continue midwifery. So much grieving, soul searching, and uncertainty occurred. My identity was very wrapped up in being a midwife and I knew that had to change. I had to come to the place where I was ok regardless of my career status. I faced so many giants in those years. And I had to die, soulfully speaking.

In April of 2017 my building sold and my partnership had finally ended (it took 3 years). Before I knew it I was looking at the building I now own and making an offer. What was going on? It was a whirlwind! It was an act of trust, one in which I was so afraid. So many what ifs. But I did it afraid. In the midst of it all, every decision felt like I was dying a slow and painful death. I realized I had PTSD over the last experience of owning a birthcenter and I was so afraid of failure! But I put one foot in front of the other. My husband was so supportive and lifted me up when I could not stand. It all fell into place and I now am living a new dream; the one that was the original dream, I just didn’t know it. The other thing was just a detour, a learning experience. Looking back, it was invaluable in shaping me into who I am today. The things that used to send me into panic don’t even make me flinch now. I faced those giants and I won. Of course God had me in the palm of His hand all along.

Now I look back and I see the blessing of God every step of the way! I couldn’t see it when I was in it. I can finally thank God for the trial. I am so excited to have a presence in Palmer, Alaska. I’m excited to serve and love women and families and hopefully be a blessing to each one, no matter where they are at in their journey. We passed our state inspection with flying colors in February! We had our first birthcenter birth last week! I am truly blessed.
