Kara Kara provides bereavement support to children, teens, families and adults. Kara is dedicated to ensuring that therapy services are accessible to the community.

Our vision is to see people of all ages compassionately supported on their journey through grief so they can move toward renewed hope and meaning. Kara services offer emotional support and information to those grieving a death or coping with a terminal illness. Kara provides a safe place to express and normalize feelings of grief, to learn to integrate grief and move forward with renewed hope and

meaning. Kara offers both peer support and therapy

Kara peer services are provided by volunteers with experience in healing from their own personal loss; volunteers who are carefully screened, trained and supervised. Donations are gratefully accepted as we do not charge a fee for peer support services. Grief therapy services are provided by interns who have completed their course requirements and are working on their client hours for licensing. Therefore Kara provides services for a reasonable fee and program staff will be happy to discuss the fee schedule with you. Kara does not espouse a particular religion or philosophy. We encourage those we serve to draw strength from their own personal spiritual beliefs, family, friends and other community resources to build sustaining support.

Do you know your rights working in California? Check with your employer to know what leave you get for bereavement.

It is important to note that while bereavement leave is a start, it often is not enough to fully support the employee's needs in terms of duration.

What are some things that would help you in a bereavement leave?

Our legacy Camp Kara program is deeply meaningful for both campers and volunteers. Camp combines an overnight "summer fun camp" for youth ages 6-17 with education, emotional support, and practical tools for rebuilding resilience and self-care after the loss of someone significant in life. Since 2008, Kara has operated this annual bereavement camp dedicated to creating a safe and caring space for grieving children and teens to share their experiences around grief and loss, acquire coping skills, and gain support from making connections with peers who "get it".

To raise the funds and build the capacity we need to deliver high quality grief support to this segment of our community, we have launched our Kara Summer Giving campaign. Please consider joining other Summer Giving donors in July and August who deepen the healing and hope we bring to grieving youth. Thank you for offering your summer gift of support for bereaved children and teens on the challenging journey through grief and loss!

Grief work is something that once you start, you will work on for the rest of your life. There are inevitably going to be times when working through your emotions feels difficult and you lose some of your original motivation.

If there is only motivation to work on grief, you may lose the feeling over time, with nothing to fall back on. This is why it is important to reflect on the meaning behind your wish to work through your grief.

Kara's Youth and Family Services is the final program that we would like to highlight the amazing work done by both staff and volunteers to support the bereaved children and families all across the Bay Area in 2024.

July is a very special month for Kara, focused on supporting bereaved children, youth, and families. In two weeks, we will host Camp Kara in 2025, a two-night experience from July 18-20 at Camp Arroyo in Livermore with about 90 bereaved youth and 45 support volunteers and staff present to honor significant persons in our lives who have died.

Our hearts go out to the grieving families in Texas whose lives have been devastated by flooding on the Guadalupe River. While there are no words that can fix or better the horrific impact of this event, Kara encourages caregivers to visit the Dougy Center online for resources to support grieving children, teens, and families who have experienced a mass tragedy. The Dougy Center's collection of online resources includes suggested ways to speak with children about safety, loss, and fear following a large-scale tragic event.

Please find and share these helpful resources at dougy.org/tragicevents.

At Dougy Center, you'll find grief support, resources, and connection before and after a death. We provide the right place when nothing feels right.
