Kara Kara provides bereavement support to children, teens, families and adults. Kara is dedicated to ensuring that therapy services are accessible to the community.

Our vision is to see people of all ages compassionately supported on their journey through grief so they can move toward renewed hope and meaning. Kara services offer emotional support and information to those grieving a death or coping with a terminal illness. Kara provides a safe place to express and normalize feelings of grief, to learn to integrate grief and move forward with renewed hope and meaning. Kara offers both peer support and therapy

Kara peer services are provided by volunteers with experience in healing from their own personal loss; volunteers who are carefully screened, trained and supervised. Donations are gratefully accepted as we do not charge a fee for peer support services. Grief therapy services are provided by interns who have completed their course requirements and are working on their client hours for licensing. Therefore Kara provides services for a reasonable fee and program staff will be happy to discuss the fee schedule with you. Kara does not espouse a particular religion or philosophy. We encourage those we serve to draw strength from their own personal spiritual beliefs, family, friends and other community resources to build sustaining support.

September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. The goal of the month is to inform the community about the warning signs of su***de and what the average person may be able to do to help prevent it. We hope you find the information in the coming weeks to be helpful, and if it is, please share it with others to help spread the word!

Today, August 30, is Grief Awareness Day! The goal of the day is to raise awareness about grief in general, as well as to share stories of our own grief. It is a day to remember our people who have died. Kara is thinking of all of you just a little extra today, and we hope you take time to take care of yourself!

We are grateful for each and every one of you, as you have donated to Kara or participated in a Kara event at some point in time, and we deeply appreciate your support. The kindness and compassion we receive from supporters like you have a tremendous healing impact on the lives of bereaved children, youth, adults, and families who have experienced loss. Through your contributions, you lift up grieving people of all ages because you understand the importance of grief support on the path toward renewed hope, purpose, and meaning. Thank you!

Bereavement has a seriously dangerous and traumatic impact on a child’s development. Research shows an adverse effect on classroom learning and participation, increased risk of substance use, and higher rates of depression and su***de. Kara’s Summer Giving Campaign enables our focused approach to meeting this crucial need in our communities through our Youth & Family services: peer grief support groups, Camp Kara, and our Journeys school-based support for students and staff. Thank you to those who have responded to the Campaign. If you have not contributed to our Summer Giving Campaign, we urge you to please make a donation and help a grieving youth today!

It's back to school season, which can be a tough time for grieving children as well as for their caregivers. Support for the grieving youth can help to alleviate that in ways that schools simply cannot do on their own.

There's only two weeks left in Kara's Summer Giving campaign! Join us in creating a grief-informed community that aims to close the gap between grieving youth and their non-grieving peers.

Youth bereavement is a public health crisis. Without intervention, the numbers speak for themselves. These children benefit from the help and care that grief support can offer.

There is still time to give to support the Bay Area's grieving youth through Kara's 2025 Summer Giving Campaign. Your support can change a child's life, uplifting them in a difficult time.
