It’s been a busy week of healing here at Stanford. Our hearts are incredibly grateful for their amazing PAR team who are the only team in the world to specialize in the reconstruction of pulmonary arteries.

Overall, Mikey is healing and doing very well. He is full of smiles and giggles and wanting to eat and move more and more. It’s truly a blessing and a miracle.

I think it’s important for people (our friends and community) to understand that when we say Mikey is doing really well- we are talking from a frame of reference that has been two years of blood clots, cardiac arrest, Ecmo, life support, aneurysms, collapsed lungs, 911 calls, a life flight across the country, countless sleepless nights in a hospital, etc.

Meaning- in comparison to ALL of that -Mikey is doing amazing! But healing from open heart surgery (6 surgeries in two years) isn’t an easy feat.

Mikey is sore. He wants to crawl and climb but that is still very painful for him.

He is facing vocal cord paralysis and side effects of multiple intubations in a short span of time that require extra treatment.

And we are waiting to hear about a possible blot clot in the heart. Something that would normally frighten anyone but somehow that seems very minor to us in the grand scheme of things.

The days are long as we are helping Mikey with hours of therapy learning to stand and walk, eat and drink, and all the things he did before in a safe way as he heals.

He looks to us each day for reassurance and safety as he is poked for labs, wheeled around for tests, and met by lots of strangers all trying to help him.

The nights, while quieter, are still filled with beeps and vital checks and feedings around the clock.

We want you to know Mikey IS doing amazing. His heart is repaired! But Mikey’s lungs and pulmonary arteries will never be like yours or mine. Recovery is harder after a 6th open heart surgery as opposed to 1. And sometimes the bumps along the road just take time!

If you’ve been wondering why we’re not rushing home- it’s only been a week. And while Mikey’s crushing it— we know you can’t rush healing.

Thank you all for your kind words, prayers, and support. We truly appreciate all the goodness that has come our way. Above all- thank you for continuing to cheer for Mikey!

We are full of gratitude and happy to share Mikey's full repair was a success after a very long 14 hour surgery.

He is sedated, on a ventilator and on a paralytic medication to help his heart and lungs heal. But his vitals are stable .

We are optimistic that with a little time the recovery will continue to be successful

Mikey is still in surgery but things are going as planned. It will be a long one. Please don’t stop praying.

Someone recently asked me, “how do you send your baby into open heart surgery? I could never do it.”

My answer was simple: I have no choice. And If you had to do it, you would.

It feels impossible.

You hug, kiss, pray, and cry over this perfect little person who is all yours. Only to then place them into the hands of others.

But that’s your job, my job, as a mom. My job is to fight for Mikey with everything in me.

It doesn’t get easier. Honestly, while those first surgeries were scary because he was so little and we didn’t know so much - the ignorance was a protective shield.

Now we know alot…we know what the complications can be, we know what long weeks of recovery can look like and feel like, we know the agony of the ICU dance. We’ve seen others victories, we’ve seen others’ losses.

But mostly, we know just how much Mikey means to us, our family, our community.

Tomorrow, December 5th, Mikey will go into his 6th open heart surgery here at Stanford in what we are hoping will be a full repair.

Our team is the best. Everyone is optimistic. And Mikey is a fighter like no one I’ve ever met.

Please wrap him in love and prayers. If you can, please donate a few dollars to your charity of choice in his merit. If you’re Jewish, please consider lighting Shabbat candles before sundown. Pray for him, his surgical team, the ICU nurses.

Today we took a drive to San Fransisco. I’ve always wanted to see the Golden Gate Bridge and honestly- the anxiety of everything ahead this week has begun to creep up on Mordy and I both. We thought some fresh air could do us all some good.

It was spectacular. Like kinda take your breath away. I mean, it’s a bridge. But it’s stunning. And big. And being over the beautiful ocean with the smell of salt and sound of seals just does something for my nervous system.

It’s therapy.

These are the moments I pray we get more of with Mikey. Nothing fancy- just smiles, nature, and a moment to just breathe with the little people I love most in this world.

Would be extra special to bring my parents here too.

On a side note: the hills in San Fransisco are crazy and exactly what you see in the movies! Crazy!

Happy to share that we made is safely to California. Our hearts are full as we spend this Shabbat /weekend with Mikey soaking up all his cuddles and cuteness in sunshine. 🌴☀️💙

Monday he will be admitted. Friday is surgery.

We are hoping and praying for a “full” heart repair and smooth recovery. It’s a big one.

Please pray for Mikey.

A few weeks have passed and we have started to settle into summer. Did I mention how being home for part of the summer feels like an extra special gift?

Past summers spent in the hospital really make me realize that I can’t take the simple, mundane, every day pleasures for granted like playing in your own backyard, water table fun, too many ice pops and swinging in the front tree.

We are so blessed.

Mikey continues to amaze us all, especially his many therapist who haven’t seen him in two months. They have commented on how much his stamina has improved and how his receptive and expressive language skills have exploded.

He is crawling and scooting all around the house although we are fine tuning those skills, standing with support, enjoying vertical play and mastering his explorer mini, and adapting to his new “talker.” These things are bridge tools but it’s absolutely amazing to seem him use them and help him move and communicate!

His favorite thing to do is chase his sister in the explorer mini and pull everything off the tables! Yah, for trouble!

He is scheduled for G-Tube surgery at the end of August and we are excited for him to finally have his nose, throat and face free of tubes! It will be a new world for him to explore without the cumbersome NG tube always in his way.

His most recent echo was stable and he has a lung perfusion scan closer to fall to really give us a better idea where he is holding. So we keep praying and hoping and living this wonderful life one moment at a time.

Thank you for all your continued love, support, prayers and good wishes!

What a relief it is to be home, for now.

Last summer, we spent all of July, August, and part of September in the hospital. It was hard and sad to see a summer fly by without getting to enjoy a lot of our favorite things. It was particularly hard not to have that quality time with our our big kids.

All the more joyful we feel that we made it back home from Stanford by July 1st!

Mikey is being monitored closely by his Michigan team and they are updating Stanford regularly. We are hopeful he can get his heart repair in a year from now and that he can get a good stretch of time out of the OR.

Let summer begin!
