Our Story
My Story: I was married right out of college & divorced a year later. I needed something to help myself so I found a book on yoga & meditation & started practicing in my studio apartment. At that time yoga was not mainstream & it was considered ‘odd’ & ‘New Age.’ Gradually yoga made it’s way into the park districts. I continued taking Hatha Yoga through the park departments through the years because it helped me. Years later I attended the Midwest Yoga Conference with some yogis from my park department class. We went for a girls’ yoga weekend & it changed my life. There were many different types of yoga to sample & we did. Then we went to a Kundalini Yoga class. I was smitten! It touched my heart in a powerful way. While I totally enjoyed my Hatha Yoga classes, I felt that I wanted more. More what? I wasn’t sure. Kundalini Yoga was the answer for me. I went to India with Shakta Kaur who taught that first class that I attended. I never thought about going to India but suddenly, it was all I could think about. I had to go. I went. I loved it. Then when my working situation changed drastically & time opened up, I took my Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training in Prince Edward Island, Canada. It was 2010. Shakta Kaur was my teacher & she brought in Master teachers to also teach us. It was a grueling experience. My brain was on overload. My body ached. We had very little sleep. There were very early morning sadhnas & I didn’t think I could absorb one more concept. I loved every minute! I still feel so connected to the yogis who shared that Teacher Training with me. So that’s it. I started teaching Kundalini Yoga at a little metaphysical shop through the grace of the owner there. Not many people came but I loved teaching this yoga so I continued whether there was 1 yogi or 4 yogis. Many times there were 0 yogis. Gradually, I changed my living room & dining room into my yoga studio & that’s where I have been teaching Kundalini Yoga for the past several years. More people have heard of Kundalini Yoga these days but it’s still much less popular than Hatha Yoga. The people who come to my classes are so awesome! Kundalini Yoga is very different from other yogas. It fills a void & makes an upward connection for me as it does for the yogis who attend class. I clearly remember this from my teacher training, Yogi Bhajan said to never judge a person who comes to class because you never know what war they are coming from. I have found this to be so true. Sometimes the yogis share their stories after class when we are having Yogi Tea. This yoga is healing, balancing, & connecting. There is a calmness over people after the first class. The yogis report a better feeling of well-being in their daily life. Kundalini Yoga is not for everyone. Everyone is not ready for the power of Kundalini Yoga & Meditation. That’s okay. Find a yoga that works for you. That’s the important thing. Find what works for you. This works for me & many others. I would suggest giving it a try. There is no obligation to continue. There are two classes on Tuesdays, one at 4:15pm & second class at 6:30pm. Cost is $10 per class. Classes are drop in so come as your schedule allows. Location is Palos Hills,IL. I’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for people to attend. All you have to do is walk in the door, that’s the hardest part.
Class Details: Kundalini Yoga, Meditation, & Deep Relaxation are a part of every class. Kundalini Yoga is suitable for newbies & advanced. Chair yogis welcome.
NO 'pretzel' twisting poses or headstands. NO session sign up. Just show up! Bring a friend or relative if you are nervous to come alone. But no need to be worried, the yogis are so nice & everyone just does the best they can. Eyes are mostly closed so the other yogis are not watching you. They are doing their own internal & physical work. Yogi Bhajan said that you receive all the blessings of the pose if you are doing your best. That means that sometimes yogis may need to use visualization because a part of their body is healing or just doesn’t move that good anymore (think knees). There are yoga benches here for you to use to accommodate yourself. No worries!
Two classes every Tuesday 1) 4:15pm & 2) 6:30pm. $10/class
