When early reflexes like rooting & sucking don’t fade on time, the mouth reacts automatically—turning, sucking, or pushing food out. Voluntary skills like chewing, tongue movement, and lip closure may be delayed or poorly coordinated.

🥄The result? Texture refusals, food battles, and limited variety.

It’s not stubbornness—it’s the nervous system doing its best. Reflex integration and feeding therapy can help! 💪👶

✨Why is your child a picky eater? It might be more than just preference...
Retained primitive reflexes—like the Moro, rooting, or gag reflex—can interfere with your child’s ability to feel safe and comfortable during meals. These reflexes can cause oral sensitivity, poor postural control, and anxiety around new textures.

🌟 Supporting reflex integration may help expand food variety and reduce mealtime stress!

The good news?
Reflex integration strategies AND oral motor support can make a BIG difference. 💪

Early support helps kids feel more regulated, connected, and confident in their communication and feeding skills.

🚨 Did you know an unintegrated Moro reflex can impact more than just movement?

This early survival reflex—also known as the “startle reflex”—should naturally fade in infancy. But if it sticks around, it can interfere with:
👅 Oral-motor coordination (making feeding more challenging)
🧠 Regulation and attention (which affects language learning)
🗣️ Speech clarity (due to persistent tension in the jaw, neck, and shoulders)

If you notice persistent startle responses, feeding challenges, or speech delays, it might be more than just a phase. Early support makes a big difference!

In short: a retained FPR doesn’t block reflexes from existing, but it can inhibit their normal development, expression, or integration by keeping the nervous system in a stuck, defensive mode.

✨ Did you know? The Fear Paralysis Reflex, an early survival response in infants, can impact how babies develop oral motor skills! 🍼
When this reflex doesn’t integrate properly, it can lead to tension in the jaw, tongue, and facial muscles, making it harder for babies to latch, suck, swallow, or even babble clearly. 💬

Struggling with speech, feeding, or language delays?
Unintegrated primitive reflexes or retained reflexes might be part of the puzzle. These early reflexes (such as FPR, for example) help form the foundation for essential skills like sucking, swallowing, chewing, and even speaking. When they stick around longer than they should, they can interfere with muscle coordination, breath control, and motor planning—all critical for communication and feeding.
Through integration, we can support clearer speech, safer feeding, and stronger language development. 💬🍽️

We're so proud to celebrate the graduation of our amazing graduate student, Ms. Kiera, as she embarks on her next chapter as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)!
🎓😃🎉
From day one, she brought dedication, compassion, and a true passion for helping others.

We have no doubt that she’s going to be an incredible SLP. Her future clients and colleagues are lucky to have her, and we can't wait to see all the ways she’ll shine in this field.

Wishing you all the best as you begin your journey—we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way! 💙✨

Earlier this month, Katie and Caitlin attended a continuing education course at , diving deep into the meaning of primitive reflexes and their impact on brain development.

This knowledge will help Carney Speech and Feeding get to the root causes of feeding, speech, and language delays, allowing us to better support every child who comes through the clinic.

We were also thrilled to meet Moira Dempsey, the creator of RMTi (Rhythmic Movement Training International)!

It was an incredible weekend of learning, connection, and growth — and we’re so grateful for the opportunity!

After your child acquires their first 50 words, children start to combine single words into phrases. Sentence length should be equal to their age (2 year olds use 2-word utterances and 3 year olds use 3-word utterances) until they are 5 years old.
**The +1 Routine is a strategy to increase your child's utterance length**
