Kay "Mimi" Hughes

Frannie Kay “Mimi” Hughes, 63, of Pampa finished her earthly journey to the arms of her Savior on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 in Pampa, Texas surrounded by her family.

Services will be 2:00 PM on Friday, February 20, 2026 at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Ian Jones and Nathan Bailey of Somerville Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

Kay was born September 24, 1962 to Norman Byrle “Rod” and Billie Kay Smithers. She was in the class of 1981 at Pampa High School and was a member of the High School Journalism Dept and Yearbook Staff. She was an accomplished photographer. She covered high school sports and often needed to consult on articles about sports she was unfamiliar, but she accepted the challenge.

She was a member of the Church of Christ her entire life and was currently attending Somerville Street Church of Christ. Kay loved to serve her Lord. Through the years, she often volunteered for various works especially associated with the children, youth, and meal preparation. She organized the community Christmas Day dinner for many years. She was very detailed oriented and organized, which served her well over the years. She was a secretary, bookkeeper, and tax preparer for various companies and churches. She also baked and decorated wedding cakes, but her love was raising her family and serving the Lord.

As a child, her parents introduced her to the western way of life and unwritten moral code of living. She was honest and true to her beliefs. Right was always to be respected and worth defending. Her parents owned and operated Rod’s Western Wear and she learned to count by operating the cash register at a very young age. Kay grew up riding horses and caring for animals. She was especially fond of chihuahua dogs.

Kay married her high school sweetheart, Darryl Hughes on January 22, 1983. She later confessed that the first time she saw Darryl pass her in the high school hallway she decided she was going to marry him. And like most things she completed the task after a few years. Her good cooking sealed the deal. They were married for 43 years and raised two wonderful children together. They both enjoyed RV camping and often traveled to Colorado to enjoy the scenery, especially the mountain streams and fall foliage. Taking along a grandchild was a bonus.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rod and Kay Smithers; and her grandparents, Rosa and Leslie Kay Coombes.

Kay is survived by her husband, Darryl of the home; son, Ryan Darryl Hughes and wife Amanda Jo of Midland, Texas; daughter, Andrea Kay Hughes of Pampa; and grandchildren, Theodore Ryan Hughes of Midland and Emerson Kay Hughes of Pampa. She was affectionately known as “Mimi” to the grandchildren. She took her parental responsibility very seriously.

Memorials can be made to Pampa Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), PO Box 2095, Pampa, Texas, 806-669-5775. Kay always adopted a new pet from an animal rescue, and every pet was well cared for. She once nursed a crippled chihuahua for over a year and earned the admiration of the Houston Pet Rescue.

The family would like to express appreciation to Interim Hospice of Pampa for their compassion and excellent care especially Andrea, Patsy, and Hanna.
