As the busy holiday season approaches, it is important to remember that holidays aren’t always joy-filled. For some, holidays can be stressful, and for others maybe a time of grievance. For those who are impacted by mental illness, the holiday season can be especially challenging. Set boundaries, say no, make your mental health a priority, don’t compare yourself to others, and remember that we all go through things differently 🫶🏼

This is amazing news! The events of the world, some of which are specific to the Florida Panhandle (Hurricane Michael) that have happened over the last few years have greatly impacted our population - including our elders. It is imperative that they have accessibility to quality mental health care also!

Su***de.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month - a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by su***de. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss su***de prevention and to seek help.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

The nervous system is a barometer of our health and well-being on many different levels. Your thoughts are a direct manifestation of the current state of your nervous system. Our brain, which can work for us or against us, cultivates a narrative in an attempt to make sense of what it is that we are feeling. This is how the mind and the body are connected. By bringing more awareness to the state of our nervous system, we put ourselves in a better mindset when we attempt to change or challenge our thoughts. Taking note of what state we are in (hypoarousal, hyperarousal etc.) we can use grounding or mindfulness to effectively regulate our nervous system.

There first must be awareness and acceptance for there to be change.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. This therapeutic intervention is often used for clients who have experienced some degree of trauma. This therapy has been proven to reduce the symptoms related to depression, phobias, anxiety, PTSD and other emotional issues. EMDR influences and impacts the way the brain processes information, thus allowing a release of emotional experiences that have been “trapped” in the nervous system. The trained therapist then works very closely with this client to recall the disturbing feeling or memory. These feelings or memories can be reprocessed by using bilateral stimulation of the brain. Bilateral stimulation of the brain includes engaging both the left (logical) and right (emotional) hemispheres of the brain. This can be done be encouraging any side to side pattern. Such as tapping both feet - left, right, left, right or by simply moving your eyes left and right. This back and forth movement engages both hemispheres of the brain allowing our brain to reprocess the memory. This results in painful feelings being exchanged for more peaceful feelings. It is important to note that EMDR therapy must be done by a trained EMDR therapist, and results very by client.
