Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba,” is a rare but deadly microscopic organism that has recently been spreading through tap water in parts of the United States. This parasite can enter the human body when contaminated water flows into the nose—typically during activities like swimming in warm freshwater or rinsing sinuses with unboiled or untreated tap water. Once inside, it travels up the olfactory nerve into the brain, where it causes a fast-acting and almost always fatal condition called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Although infections remain extremely rare, recent fatal cases have drawn renewed attention to the risks of using unboiled tap water in nasal irrigation devices such as neti pots. The amoeba does not pose a threat when swallowed—it only causes harm when water enters the nasal passages. To reduce the risk, health officials strongly recommend using only sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water for any form of nasal rinsing.

Functional Medicine

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ?

According to the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM), “Functional Medicine is a systems biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease.” Functional Medicine is the future of healthcare. It is a holistic approach to achieve optimal health through personalized health care, addressing the cause of the disease of the mind, body, spirit, as well as environmental factors which impact health. Functional medicine practitioners understand this, as well as the complexity of chronic disease, thus practitioners of functional medical are able to tailor a treatment plan specific to the individual.

WHY SEE A FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONER AND MY PRIMARY DOCTOR ?

Given the current healthcare model with insurance companies limiting a physician's time spent with each patient, many physicians simply do not have the time to effectively educate and support all of their patients' wellness needs, let alone make a substantial impact on mind-body-spirit health. Seeing a patient for only 7-15 minutes (depending on how much insurance will reimburse for the physician's time) does not allow much opportunity to educate their patients about the complexities of their disease let alone how to manage their chronic diseases through nutrition, nor educating them about supplements. A patient with chronic disease will pay a 20-30 dollar copay for 7-15 minutes of time with their doctor. Multiply that over the minimum of 4 times a year the patient with chronic disease needs to be seen for repeat labs, and that may add up to one hour of time with their doctor a year. That’s where an FM practitioner can step in to help fill in (and not replace) the gaps left by conventional medicine. Functional medicine practitioners do not deal with insurance companies, so they are free to spend as much time with clients as is necessary. During their time together, the Functional Medicine practitioner will validate the client by actively listening to the client‘s wellness history, listen to their desired goals, review previous diagnostics and laboratory results (in order to thoroughly explain what all of the values mean), and help them with a diet and lifestyle change wellness plan based on their desired goals. The wellness plan is personally built for the individual, since functional medicine is not one size fits all. The practitioner will thoroughly educate the client on how to reach their desired goals and inspire them to begin the desired diet and lifestyle change, while providing support every step of the way.
