Myofunctional therapy... what's that??
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is neurological re-education focusing on the mouth (oro), face (facial) and regions of the neck (oropharyngeal area). Orofacial myofunctional disorders include alterations in breathing patterns, chewing, swallowing, speech, and oral rest posture. The four main goals of myofunctional therapy are to establish and maintain:
1. A competent lip seal
2. Consistent nasal breathing
3. Correct tongue posture
4. A correct swallow pattern
Myofunctional therapy has been shown to have a positive impact on eating, speaking, breathing, sleep (including mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea), cosmetic and dental concerns, headaches, reduction of forward head posture, etc.
Many dentists that specialize in releasing tongue and lip ties require myofunctional therapy both before and after release to increase success of the revision and retrain the muscles of the orofacial region that have been compensating for a restricted tongue.
Just a reminder: Snoring may be common, but it is NOT normal!
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. Myofunctional Therapy helps to treat the OMDs.
